Australia to enforce internet filter

'sites featuring criminal content such as child sex abuse, bestiality, rape and detailed drug use.'

dobt see the issue.

You really don't see the issue?

You don't get to see the list of banned websites. Do you just trust Conroy's word that only those sort of sites will be included and no others?

During the 7 month trial online gambling sites (which are not illegal in Australia), an anti-abortion website and the website of a bus company appeared on that list. Knowing that how can you trust that this time it will be different and that legal sites will not be banned?

And a few more. Somebody go find that link.

Why don't countries focus their attention on actually stopping the abuse and more specifically the sexual exploitation of children as opposed to just creating a filter for child porn sites.

That is the electronic equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and going "LALALALALALALALA".

Don't pretend the problem doesn't exist and try to hide it. Rather take those resources that would have gone into some unconstitutional interwebs filter and work towards solving child porn or at the very least helping the children who have been victims of it.

I agree, but I am too lazy to find it.

The whole thing is a farce. Easily bypassed and horribly open to abuse.

hmmm notice that's what china's reason is too...... see the issue now?
And with the outdated BS about violent games I wouldn't trust them as my spam filter

+1. Completely ineffectual as a filter. Those determined to get their hands on kiddy porn (or purchase a bus ticket if past experiences are anything to go on...bad buses!! :p) will bypass it without too much hassle.

However this brainfart still costs money... taxpayers money.

I thought the politicians admitted that it is not technically feasible without slowing down everything?

If you don't see the issue then youre not paying attention, once this kind of thing is in place it's open to abuse.

Someone disagrees with the government, and blogs about it, no problem, ban the site.

Someone is outspoken about human rights but those rights do not match the governments views, no problem ban him.

A site contains a forum where members discuss the governments shortcomings. no problem, get the IP's arrets the members and o yeah, ban them.

Someone sells something cheaper than some government officials wife's business can, no problem ban the site now your's is the cheapest :D

these filters are not only designed to block what comes in, but what goes out too, so some news you do not want the outside world to know about, yes you guessed it, block it.

Don't you just love the Aussies? They provided the world with a one click listing of the least savoury sites on the internet. Have fun;)

Good luck to those emigrating to Australia... no more free speech for you folks! haha
I think it's unbelievable that a first-world country (perhaps not anymore?), can actually approve this level of censorship.
Whether someone can bypass the filter is irrelevant, the point is that the aussies now officially has a government that will think on their behalf and will control absolutely everything they read.

Bull****!!! Absolute Bull****!!!! I'm sick and tired of dictated morals and the squashing of freedom. If people want to see explicit drug use by others, and sheep shagging.... Let them.... that's freedom. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT.... LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Where is the line drawn???? We all know it will eventually lead to less freedom, more control and eventualy enslavement of body and mind. All without the knowledge of the person who is being "protected" from the harsh realities of the world. WTF!!!?!?? Why hide what is really there??? It just causes less understanding and more problems inevitably.

Stopping people from seeing something won't stop them from doing it. I'm glad I have been able to see things which sicken me. It makes me aware of what I am up against, provide me with facts which I can then teach my children to beware of.

Where will true information come eventually come from??? Government parastatal institutions hell bent on controlling your path of thought. **** THAT!

I vote for freedom. The good, the bad and the ugly without censorship. Even if some find it offensive or in bad taste, it's better than being ignorant.

I'm glad the general consensus on this forum is in favor of freedom and not censorship. It gives me some hope that if the same thing should happen here, there will be a fight.
