Australia to enforce internet filter

I bet it won't be long before the SA govt implements something like that here. They'll also hike our taxes to pay for it.

The whole internet should just go encrypted, no small feat but something we should look at.

No. Governments should not encrypt the internet, they should leave it alone.

At the same time if they find someone is posting child pr0n - arrest the bugger and most important - save the poor children. Do something similarly for bestiality if it's illegal. Criminal activity should also be outlawed - eg phishing, identity theft, DDOS, etc.

However, we have laws against all of these things. There are anti-child abuse laws, there are anti-fraud laws etc.

I mean we should encrypt it, not government. Look at what government is doing, we find ourselves somewhere between a rock & a hard place.

They're too incompetent for that and fortunately there are much bigger issues that SA has to deal with before getting involved in stuff like this.

Obviously banning the pr0n on the web and subversive messages on the internet will stop the astronomically high rape and child abuse figures in SA. Didn't you know?

If they ban such minor things, they must also ban access to Islamic fundamentalist websites that broadcast decapitations, murders, and the like. They cannot simply ban child porn or drug use as the excuse. The ban must be broad-spectrum and ban everything that is not politically expedient to their nation.

Child pr0n is illegal. If there are sites hosting it, they should shut those down and then find the children in the child pr0n to most importantly rescue them and find the producers, handlers etc.

The real deal is that freedom of speech will be stiffled. So what if there is dagga cookie recipie info online. So what that some fascist or religious nuts have their say. If they are breaking the law such as incinting violence - they can be arrested by the same laws they'd have broken if they hired airtime on TV, radio or put up posters on lampposts.

Governments just want control. It should be none of their business.

Point 1: They wont stop the spread of child pornography in this way, most of the really bad stuff is not that obvious to find. Also, like with torrents... they will find another way.

Point 2: The little guy must always have his say... even if he is wrong. This is the nature of freedom of speech. Not only that its also impossible do define exactly what all these evils are... is it better to expose things so that everyone can see what is happening or hide it ?

I agree with what Peter said... if someone commits a crime on the internet then arrest them... its that easy.

This is like trying to kill a flea with a sledgehammer. By all means catch and kill the flea, but don't damage everyone else in the process.

The article does not mention any technical details about how this filter would work, but IMO the only way to block access would be to prevent access to certain IP addresses from a transparent proxy, and even that can be circumvented with other proxies for the blocked IP address(es).

Sheep Dropping Tea must be going cheap in Oz, unless Oz intends to outsource the updating of its list of blocked IP addresses to China.

and so it begins, this will most likely get done in other countries too. The conspiracy theorists predicted this kind of thing

First porn, then piracy then freedom of speech.
Btw I wonder what that Austrialian porn site Abby Winters is going to do now

The internet is a big problem when governments wan't to control the populations. I always brushed off the conspiracies as nonsense because if all of it was true then why haven't they blocked the net in the west too, but maybe there is something too it.

But in all fairness this could be a genuine attempt to stop child pr0n and bestiality which is just plain sick

Why don't countries focus their attention on actually stopping the abuse and more specifically the sexual exploitation of children as opposed to just creating a filter for child porn sites.

That is the electronic equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and going "LALALALALALALALA".

Don't pretend the problem doesn't exist and try to hide it. Rather take those resources that would have gone into some unconstitutional interwebs filter and work towards solving child porn or at the very least helping the children who have been victims of it.

I agree, but I am too lazy to find it.

I agree with you. If you want to create a filter make it optional, and you will find that no one uses it.
