She said the existing system, which sets limits on stretches of highway deemed to be dangerous, was the best way to guarantee safety. And traffic jams were just as damaging to the environment as driving fast, she said.
I like this woman, braincells galore unlike in South Africa where we prolly have better roads but the worst drivers. The rule keep left and pass right does not apply here due to lack of enforcement. Normally Three left lane of four are normally occupied by trucks, taxis and the forth lane is thus filled with slow traffic refusing the return left as there is more trucks kilometers ahead!

Drivers' association ADAC had also rejected the idea although some polls show up to 60% of Germans favour it.

That is probably the 60% old folk that cannot handle speed and wants the Autobahn for a Sunday drive instead.

Highly doubt that.

And it's not just the roads, it's the quality of the monitoring, response and maintenance systems that they have in place that makes high speed travel possible.

You have never been to Germany, have you?

If that is what You say Master, who am I to argue your insight! I was in Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, USA, Canada and Czech. Rode on the Autobahn, Host driving in Germany. We have sections locally in Gauteng which with the added emergency lane is much beater than most roads in Germany and Europe but the road use or utilization is terrible. While driving in Germany a car in front of us was pulled of by cops and when I queried the host what was happening he told me the guy was driving in the fast lane without passing a vehicle. Strict enforcement of the rules ensure a fast open lane most of the times except in case of peak traffic closer to main CB'D areas. That was my experience! Maybe you can enlarge as you know obviously better!

Thanks for the rephrase as that is exactly what I meant!

Ummm I think BobbyMac was referring to the quality of the roads and he's right. I remember reading an SA/Germany road comparison a while back and the Germans have MUCH thicker reinforcement layers on their roads i.e. smoother ride and potholes don't form as often.

WTF?

I was in Germany 3 months ago, and even their arterials are better than our main roads and highways. All South African roads are in a generally dismal state with the exception of some of the Gauteng highways and most of the toll roads.

Even some of the toll roads are bad. The N3 between Jhb and Dbn is absolutely horrible, especially after Harrismith. There always seems to be some kind of construction but nothing noticeable is ever achieved. The N2 along the coast isn't much better.

Well our average IQ is around 70 odd IIRC. So yeah she probably is very far ahead. Her predecessor though was well below our average that is for sure ;)

Saying that I think there should be speed limits :D

True and fact! I was referring to driving space, amount of lanes and the ability to speed. I always speed and sometimes between JHB and PTA fly in the most left lane just to slack down pass a truck and go again. Reason is the fast lanes are occupied by slow traffic all driving next to each other. Yeah that means its the people not the road. Concerning the potholes and smoothness, well we are in Africa!

There are two types of bad drivers on South African roads: those that speed and those that "fly in the most left lane". You're both.

Yeah, been doing that one for 3 weeks every weekend now :(

The same on the N1 South just before Bloemfontein - they've been working on those roads since I can remember (literally when I moved to SA I remember them working on that road) yet no improvements seem forthcoming.

Why?

Does the fact it's dangerous to you and others and against the law count for anything

Nope, (Touch wood) I never ever caused and or was involved in an accident, not even close to a near accident with another vehicle! I have brains, am an active driver and always alert, even when I am drunk :D
And I never roll eyes onto another, so feminine!

Well I'm sure all speeders think they are capable drivers

*can't help the eye spasms sorry :p:D*

So you drive recklessly and are an active, capable and alert driver, even when drunk?

BULLSHIT!

Ah, I do not drink, am never drunk (that stopped when I was 18 many years ago) so please do not get an Aorta attack or an erection (High blood pressure), not good for your health! :D
