Automatic Crawling Speed

8km/h in my 1.8 Astra automatic (4speed). However I try to avoid going below 10 km/h because the instant fuel consumption then changes from l/100km to l/hour and it feels like such a waste.

It really does feel like a waste especially when I'm trying to bring down the average fuel used throughout the journey.

Agreed, if I wanted to ruin my average consumption I'll do so by flooring it every time I pull away for a stop. I like how it hits 39.8l/100km under hard acceleration :D

Just doubled checked the speed: 8km/h with and without aircon. 320nm seems to be more than enough torque for it to not make a difference :)

Able to do this at 7Km/h with a 1.8 manual. I'm considering the auto route, just because of the stop/start.

but doesn't an automatic also technically have to engage/disengage the clutch every time you brake? yes it saves one leg from a bit of exercise i guess.

my i10 1.2 is able to crawl as well - rough guess about 10 or a little bit lower. 2nd gear crawl is +- 15 - quite an irritation since complex speed limit is 10km/h

So I've been really interested to find out, from those that have automatic vehicles, what speed their car crawls in traffic. My A4 goes around 9 - 10 km/h without using the accelerator.

It also got me wondering if there isn't maybe a standard speed in place similar to the Gentleman's Agreement for governing top speeds amongst the German manufacturers.

i must play around with my vcds cable / software this weekend , maybe its a setting, goodness knows there is a setting for almost everything on these cars

True, but the process is a lot smoother, and doesn't require you to have depress the clutch half-way when crawling even slower. At least you just let the brake pedal up slightly in an automatic. First world problems I guess.

My parents 318i e46 auto also seems to craw at around 8km/h also on some hills it's stationary without needing to press the brake or accelerator :D Tis a breeze, but I do miss driving a manual car :crying:

This is more applicable to dual clutch transmissions, which is not technically automatic. In fact, if you have a DSG, DCT, or whatever your manufacturer calls it, you shouldn't be standing on the brake pedal with your gears engaged because your clutch would still be engaged. But this is a bit off the actual topic.

I thought petrol, therefore power, could only be "issued" with the accelerator. I thought there may be a "leak"

Same here, most manuals can crawl in traffic quite easily,

Just need to get someone in front of you who using trying to tailgate other people off the road, and braking constantly.

Its actually possible to even hop out the car when its in gear and jog/walk alongside.....

Ok let me put it to you this way, what did you think would happen if you let out the clutch (gently) without touching the accelerator? Petrol is still flowing without you touching the accelerator, that's how the engine idles :D

I have an i20 CRDI manual.
Able to crawl up to 10kmph in 1st, change to second and it goes up to 25kmph without the clutch.
As long as there is no incline at all in the road, I am able to switch to 3rd also.

Would you like to have a crawling drag race sometime? :D I have a feeling diesel would win against petrol though.

That's when you'd want to own a Merc with the 7G tronic transmission...2 reverse gears
