Automatic trans: correct usage at drive-through?

OP's being blinded by brake lights might account for his inability to judge quality of photos ... all becomes clearer.

Actually, I've just read the thread, and from what I can see you reacted to joking with a fair amount of aggression and insults yourself.
Joking? I'm sorry if you aren't aware of the context Splinter, but this isn't a joke:

That's an off-topic insult, as I have come to expect from Sinbad, Dave, Biometrics and Satanboy. They all pride themselves on being edgy, but sadly they're pretty unoriginal.

However I don't care too much about them, more about genuine engagement. I even respond to all of their genuine contributions with measured responses (like this one to you), but if you expect me to respond to their insults with love and kisses then I think you're mistaking me for Baby Jeebers.

The fact that you'd also be a considerate driver at night-time and not blind others, well that's just a nice feel-good bonus innit?

Have you considered seeing if you can take your car into a BMW specialist so they can turn the eye searing intensity of the dash lights down for you? That way, when you're in the local Pizza Hut drive thru your eyes wouldn't be dazzled by the brightness of the dash either.

I would bet for an extra fee they could probably even give them that special yellow cast with added flare Nikon look...

RBP'ed Dave. You desisting in the personal insults will be greatly appreciated :)

You realize that this could be a double-edged sword? For example, you called me an ass-hat, because, yep, I drive an auto and, horror of horrors, use the brakes. I would relax a wee bit if I was you.

Personal insults? please point them out as none were made, and I'd really hate to think I was unintentionally upsetting you.

You see I think he KNOWS that photo was terrible, and thus any reference to bad photos must automatically be an insult to him...?

It's called "Giving him enough rope to hang himself" ;)

And you said something about my mother. I didn't throw my toys out of the pram, and wail.

Maybe you should man up, my ma don't like no namby pamby lady boys

Splinter, the difference is that I did a lot more than that. It was a qualified few responses, going into details about what reached this conclusion. Most importantly, it was on-topic. Photography and pizza hut have nothing on-topic here except in an ad-hominem sense, don't you agree?

Such ingratitude! He appears to be extremely sensitive to light and I bet he hadn't even realised that BMW could turn down the intensity of his internal lights, it's terrible when you actually try and help people and they get irrationally angry...

Do you think it's a Nikon owners thing?

It's certainly making his temper flare

True Hamish, but then you haven't launched an all-out campaign against me like our dear friends Dave, Sinbad and Biometrics have ;) I at least try and create a topic that has some value and then engage with all well-intended and constructive input respectfully. Others here ... not so much. They just come in and treat it as their personal playpens.

Up is a manual. Just moving constantly so don't feel like pulling up the handbrake everytime. If the line is long then I will do that.

It is the exact same thing on VW's. Auto Hold doesn't pull the handbrake up, just uses the front brakes. Auto hold just keep the brakes in until you press on the accelerator, then it releases.

Interesting. You learn something new everyday. Thank you.

For the people whose auto-transmissions are still the old school kind, the alternative is simply this:
-> Put foot on brake -> Change mode to neutral (doesn't go through Reverse) -> Pull up handbrake -> Release foot from brake.

Oh No, I've been doing it wrong all this time.

Well it seemed to be such a controversial point I figured it was worth splitting it out for people who were saying "Oh noes, my old-fashioned automatic doesn't have a new-fangled Park button that I can just press without triggering my reverse lights and therefore I MUST stand on my brakes and blind everybody and place strain on my gearbox into the equation."

nope

Never put your car in neutral at a stop light: It won's save you any fuel (fractions of a litre if any), and it can wear on the transmission.

Looking at the aggro reaction here that I've faced, is it any wonder? Would you join in and agree, just to face attacks? It's precisely because people like Dave don't give a rats ass about anybody else that this is even an issue in the first case. I know for a fact that it's a bigger issue than the limited sample size here indicates, and there are countless online guides around the correct use of automatic transmissions that indicate that one shouldn't stand on the brake for extended periods of time in any case (purely for the mechanical health of your transmission). The fact that you'd also be a considerate driver at night-time and not blind others, well that's just a nice feel-good bonus innit?

I can't say I've personally ever experienced the brake lights being an issue on any car, but those damned fog lights when there is no bloody fog around is infuriating, especially the ones on the back.

More so are the fake xenons fitted into regular halogen reflectors.

Just to throw a curveball at you... my car has a double clutch... so there is no strain on anything when the brakes are pressed.

What should I do now?
