Avatar is being pulled from screens in China
SimonTheSoundMan notes that Avatar is being pulled from screens in China for being too successful, and too provocative in its anti-authoritarian message. (The 3-D and IMAX versions will remain.)

"The communist nation's state-run movie distributor China Film Group is unexpectedly yanking the James Cameron-directed blockbuster Avatar from 1,628 2-D screens this week in favor of a biography of the ancient philosopher Confucius starring Chow-Yun Fat. ... According to a report in the Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily, the move was made at the urging of propaganda officials who are concerned that Avatar is taking too much market share from Chinese films and drawing unwanted attention to the sensitive issue of forced evictions."

I read this yesterday but what confuses me is that the 3D version will remain, meaning that they have now hyped it up in China and it will probably make more money from the 3D version.
 
China is considered a "Great power". Only the US is considered "superpower"
 
Avatar is supposed to be seen in 3D anyway. At least they're supporting their local movies.

Keep in mind the following points:
There are very few 3d cinemas in China.
The ones that exist are in areas where the relatively 'rich' people live.
The 3d tickets will be much more expensive than normal tickets.
The poor people that were getting riled up about avatar because of how it symbolizes their own struggle against the rich oppressing the poor, will not have any cinemas near them in order to watch, neither will they be able to afford the ticket prices.

The combination of the above amounts to a very effective ban. China doesn't care if the rich minority can watch it, so long as the masses cannot.

I also read that the box office returns for the 2D versions only make up one-third of total revenue. The movie has been showing on 2500 screens — one-third at IMAX and 3D screens, while the remaining two-thirds are on regular 2D screens. China has about a dozen IMAX screens, 800 3D screens and approx 4500 regular screens.

2D tickets cost between $5 and $6, while regular 3D tickets are between $9 and $12. IMAX tickets are between $19 and $22.

Well now they are giving the people reasons and helping to fan the flames....

Illegal dvds of this will now 10-1 be sirculated and be in high demand all over amongst the poor...
 
Reminds of when SA banned Pink Floyd's The Wall. after it had sold millions. Became even more popular after that. dumbasses
 
Though Avatar is a silly squishy libby film, I can understand the Party's worry.

As an aside, China is hardly a military or economic superpower. Big, yes. But not super.

With a GDP of nearly $15-trillion, the USA's defence-related expenditure is around $1-trillion ($680b direct, $320b related). Perspective: that's just under a quarter of China's total GDP. Most analysts put the PRC's 2010 defence expenditure at around $160b, and a goodly portion of that is accommodation and clothing for its vast Army of 2.5 million.
