Hi peeps

I see that there is some discussion on the average speed traps that are on the N3. Does anyone know where they are and where they end? I am doing a night trip to Durban and I don't want a surprise because I was over by a few km's (a few, not 20-40km's)

I am from Durban and travel the Durban -jhb route quite often and in my experiance if you follow your cars actual speed, it is out by +/- 10 km/h. I normally set my speedocruize to my GPS speed on 125 km/h and have not yet recieved any nasty suprises. I think it starts from durban side say in the region of cato ridge to about howick and then on Van Reenens pass aswell

I've never heard of anybody actually getting a fine from these cameras and I am starting to suspect that they might only be a scare tactic. That being said under most circumstances I drive at 127km/h according to GPS speed. I have never received any fines for this speed anywhere.

I have received a few from the notties area, going down the hill towards PMB.

are these fines actually the average speed enforsment or normal traffic camara fines

Cannot help you with where they are unfortunately but I think they are brilliant. Nothing more ridiculous than the current system where someone flies up to the camera, slams on brakes and then accelerates at a rate of knots afterwards again.

Just drive at 130 (MAX) and you will be fine.

They cover the majority of the route in KZN, so there is no point knowing where they are.

Hi there ;)

Do yourself and the rest of us all a favour. Do 80 when it says 80. 100 when it says 100. And 120 when it says 120.

You'll significantly increase the odds of getting to Durban alive and the odds of taking someone else out on the road.

Plug in some of your favourite music and enjoy the drive :)

There was one in Cape Town on the M3 south. It lasted about 3 months and was taken down (or stolen, I don't know which). First the Kromboom Road one disappeared, then the Wetton Road, antenna and camera all went

Not so. Changes made. Many new ones coming. Busy with same on N2 and N1 will get it all the way up to Beaufort West.

While we all like to get there asap, I'm in favour of this sort of mechanism which enforces keeping to speed limits over a prolonged period while driving.

Do they at least have boards warning you of when it starts? I am not worried about speeding, its losing track of my speed for a while and then finding out that i was faster than the allotted time.

Watch out for speed limit signs. They are more important than camera signs. There are bits of road where the limit drops, and for good reason.

But yes they are also signposted.

N3 in KZN is quite well sign posted in respect of speed limits. IIRC the average speed cameras are also fairly clearly identified. IIRC there are some on Van Reenen's, Mooi River, Nottingham & Balgowan, Hilton through Pietermaritzburg, and then several places to Durban.
