Avg 8 isn't free!

AVG 8.0 is free, but in that edition the e-mail scanner facility only works for 30 days.
From http://free.grisoft.com/ww.news.ndi-93837:
Important information about e-mail scanning
Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet, AVG Free 8.0 does not include any "trial" or "time-out" functionality. Every option provided in the program is fully functional for the life of the product.
As many viruses come in via e-mail this makes the free edition useless.
Even if it didn't have email scanning, attachments would be scanned as soon as they were written to disk.

I installed AVG Free edition on Friday, when I got my shiny new Vista laptop.

On Saturday, I had to visit a few sites, cos I 'misplaced' my Nero Premium 7 key. Then in the afternoon I decided, screw this, I'm sick and tired of AVG Free edition's notification bar that pops up - and bought AVG 8 Internet security. It comes to R420.

Well, tonight I decided to do a scan of the laptop and was horrified (but very happy in the end) to find numerous Trojan Horses and other stuff on my laptop. AVG Free edition never picked it up!!

I guess you get what you pay for....I feel safe on the internet now. :)

Not sure what 'notification bar' you're talking about - I've been using AVG free for years, and am now using free 8.0, and I don't get a notification bar... maybe you're talking about their new 'safe surf' feature (forget what it's actually called) which you can turn off?

At the bottom....where it says show/hide notification.

With AVG Free edition, it opened every time I opened AVG to update it.

Anyone else's PC slowed down by AVG 8.0? (free version)

It sits at around 30-40mb of RAM usage with me, I think that is too much...

Plus that new notification bar is extremely invasive, way more than the little box that 7.5 has.

I think it might be time to use something else, like Avira free, http://www.free-av.com/
or Avast http://www.avast.com/ (also has free version)

Yup I've also noticed on every PC I've installed it the users imeadiatly complain their PC's are slower.

I've gone back to 7.5 it still has support until the end of the year so hopefully AVG will have a better optimised version by then.
