AVG 9 Free

I'll stick to Avira when it come to free antivirus. Been down the AVG & Avast road prior to Avira.

If you want to protect yourself against Viruses get a real Anti-Virus program such as NOD32 or Kaspersky.

I do like to push free software myself... but in the case of anti-virus I cannot recommend any of them. They all have their pros and cons... but in the end all of them fall short of the comprehensive protection you need from a proper anti-virus program.

If you are OK with bare minimum support though, then I suppose one is as good as another.

Most guys on this board use AVG, AVAST, BitDefender Free, AVIRA, etc. Just pick one. If you like the colors or the interface. Won't make much difference in the end.

BitDefender can update using local only bandwidth so that's a good reason. :D

+1, Also there are no AV vendors that I know of that have a managed, free version for commercial use.

Hey Garyvdh could you please specify comprehensive protection ill need a good argument to convince a certain someone to upgrade!

No I haven't tried it. The reviews I've read show bad detection only 11/21 viruses. It didn't detect a backdoor trojan. But the firewall portion appears to be good.

On a separate note, can anyone get the avg site to load?

Have anyone tried the new AVG 9 free. if so give some input please.
They say it scans faster & there are some extras.

One decent feature with AVG 9 is that the initial scan identifies files that it deems "safe" and doesn't, in future scans need to scan these files, making for a quicker full scan.

well it is the difference between a scanner like AVG which is known to allow some viruses through and to delete some files which are harmless.... and a scanner which has a much higher detection rate and knows better which files are harmless and should not be deleted unnecessarily.

But you can do the homework for yourself. Just Google for Anti-virus reviews / comparisons from reputable sites like PCWorld, CNet or ZDnet...

I am now getting the full install file - all 70 odd megs of it.

Will report back.

Have been using AVG for four years and it has been solid for me. Previously I had tried Norton and a number of other popular non-free options. They were all sub-optimal.

One, I remember, had the tendency to become infected with a virus itself - the actual files of the antivirus program themselves, so needless to say it never actually detected the virus. Which kinda sucked.

So far I am loving MS Security Essentials.

It stopped every bug which wanted to hitch a ride on my system to date, and I cannot see that it slows down my pc in any way.

Kaspersky for peeps that want to pay for a decent home solution. Common sense for prevention.

AVG for taking your PC to a computer store to get rid of the malicious infections and paying for the privilege. And then buying a real anti virus.

If I could recommend anything free, I remember Comodo Internet Security was pretty good.

Very good!

I installed it on my Celeron laptop at work (running Windows XP Media Edition) and it's very light on resources. Only has the basics, but its ok for when I want to quickscan USB flash drives from/for friends.

At home I've got AVG 9 paid edition on my Vista notebook....the one big change for me is that identity theft protection is not a separate icon in your system tray anymore, like in 8.5, but only one icon. And like someone else mentioned, scans are much faster and now you have the option to scan all USB flash drives that gets connected to your desktop/laptop by default.

Email scanner still working really well with Outlook 2007. No complaints here.

Happy customer.

Thanx all for your input, I've loaded it yesterday on my wife's netbook working fine.
This morning I loaded it on my laptop and did some test, it is indeed very light on resources. I've selected the option to scan usb input devices. I'm not sure if it scans any faster than 8.5, coz I inserted a 1gb usb stick into the laptop with 75% used on the stick and it took 6 & a half mins to scan, is that fast???
