AVG Internet Security 8 is a suite of tools that will keep your PC spam free and safe from viruses or nasty code snippets. The software is easy to use and is not as intrusive as some of the other applications we have tested.

A few months back, we looked at Grisoft’s free AVG antivirus offering. While it was a comprehensive application, it did lack some critical security features such as a firewall, anti-spam and anti-rootkit tools.

This month we decided to look at what you get if you purchase AVG Internet Security, a comprehensive security suite for home users. Looking at the features list, you will notice that AVG Internet Security 8 offers a comprehensive bundle of tools to ensure that you don’t get any nasty surprises on your computer.

Naturally, antivirus is first on the list. As we have come to expect, Grisoft includes their tried-and-tested AVG antivirus engine and it manages to do a great job in keeping viruses off your machine.

Spyware has also become a big issue for PCs connected to the Internet. All it takes is one infected application and your computer may be at risk. AVG’s anti-spyware will detect spyware and adware and it will even protect your computer against hidden threats known as rootkits.

Keeping you safe on the World Wide Web, AVG’s Internet Security will also eliminate spam and phishing e-mails from your inbox. While it did not catch all the nasty e-mails on the first run, the software is quick to learn what mails you don’t want, and after a few days’ use, it managed to eliminate most of the spam directed to my inbox.

For browsing, AVG will also take care of your PC by scanning the links on a Web page and blocking sites that try to install malicious code on your computer.

The installation of this security suite is straightforward, and once the components have been installed, a handy wizard will help you customise a few settings, such as when AVG should check for updates. Once you’re done, AVG will query its servers and download the latest virus signatures and program updates. AVG will also run the first virus scan once the installation has been completed.

The interface of AVG Internet Security 8 is very intuitive and will allow novice users to manage their home PCs’ security. Each of the large icons gives you the status of that module as well as a brief explanation on what it does. If you’d like to tweak your security settings, you can customise each of the 12 modules. Overall, AVG Internet Security 8 is a solid Internet-security suite. It’s not too heavy on system resources, and it managed to block all the bad code we could throw at it.
