Hi !

I am writing a short story and have questions regarding planes:

1) If a plane changes direction to avoid bad weather , by how long is the flight delayed (approx) ?

Is it a 2Km microburst, or a 500Km stormfront?. Do I fly around a Hurricane of a small thunderstorm?
Bit too vague to answer.

I would take a guess that it depends on how big the detour is to avoid the storm .
So in otherwords, how long is a piece of string ?

If the weather is causing havoc in the city where the aircraft is taking off from then the flight is more likely to be grounded rather than flying around the storm.

Its a special aircraft.

Did you see Flight ? Denzel Washington took off in bad weather , quickly ascended to avoid as he put it "****ty air"

You can calculate it yourself. Lets say from point A to point C in a straight line is 100NM but at point A the aircraft diverts toward point B, due weather, before tracking for point C again. Point A to B is 55NM and B to C is 58NM. That would add 13 miles of extra distance. Calculate the extra time by using the aircraft's ground speed.

If the direction was 180 deg the journey would be increased by infinity as the plane would run out of fuel.

So make it special enough that it doesn't need to avoid the bad weather, or change the story to not contain bad weather at all.

NYC to San Francisco is nearly 7 hrs

1) Does the plane return to NYC the same day with the same crew ?
2) How long does it take to prepare the plane for the flight back to NYC after it lands in San Francisco

1. The crew, no. Duty hours and so forth. The aircraft will go where it is scheduled to go. Maybe NY, maybe not.
2. Turn around time for an aircraft is minimum 1 hour. Clean, vacuum, refuel, catering, toilets etc.

When the plane is taking off or landing what is the name of the area the flight attendants are seating ?

How many flight levels are they ? And what altitude do they represent ?

Thanks

There are hundreds of flight levels - depending on the airspace you are in. Some vary as close as a couple of hundred feet of each other.
