R30bn for this project - 185km. They intend to toll close on 500km in phase 2 iirc...

yep and the funding is just going to become more and more vicious
the entire ****ing road maintenance project is now in the tank though if they pulled it off it would have been the ultimate caper but now its just well a ****up

It is a total dog's breakfast on the funding side, and it is quite clearly the biggest problem. Had the costs not been so overly-inflated, had the implementation not been so inefficient, and had this been done locally, then I'd be more open to the idea. But it wasn't. The other issue that motivates my disdain for this project is that they didn't really build anything. They conducted maintenance (which we already pay for) and added one additional lane to some areas. For 185km of road. One lane cost us R30bn. That's R162 million per kilometre.

That's a proposal that should have been booted upon first sight. Instead, this pathetic government have placed us in a position where we simply have to pay, for their corruption, incompetence, and ineptitude. It grates me...

To be fair, whole R21 two extra lanes per direction and in other areas also two extra. Decent lighting all the way, the only lighting previously was basically N1 in between brakfontein and buccleugh. Much better centre barrier (just check the skidmarks of the amount of people driving into it! At least these dumbasses don't end up hitting opposing traffic). Much better Allandale and Pretoria offramps/onramps. Other offramps/onramps are still messy though. Tolling system is unfair and flawed. Surface in many parts badly constructed.
 
what avis is missing is that noone denies the need to find a funding mechanism for road maintenance, what we are all saying is that etools is not the most efficient way to fund this, just increase the fuel levy, no need to an infrastructure to tax us

Just spend tax accordingly.

I am for etolls. I think they work fantastically in other places, and I think it would work well here.
The implementation in GP might be bad, but the concept is good (In my opinion). Provincial Fuel Levies would be alright too, but only if done by the Provincial Gov not National Gov.
