Newspapers at the weekend published damning allegations by a whistle-blower employed by Kapsch - the Austrian company responsible for the development of the e-tolling system used in Gauteng.

The allegations, which have been passed on to the public protector's office, imply that Gauteng motorists have been lied to.

The whistle-blower claimed that, because of a flaw in their design, the e-tolling cameras cannot read the licence plates of vehicles travelling at a certain speed.

Documents seen by The Times and confirmed by Sanral insiders show that, if motorists travel at exactly 113km/h, the special camera systems cannot capture their vehicle's registration number.

The cameras also don't work properly on 1 April.

I'm surprised it doesn't disclose the other hack that will reverse the tolls if you travel at exactly 141.622km/h

I heard that you need to reverse at exactly 141.622km/h to get a negative etoll bill?

Well you could always just travel at exactly 88mph in a DeLorean and travel back in time to before e-trolls existed?

Absolute bull! The cameras work regardless of speed. I think they'll only be unable to capture if you fly through the gantry at 300km/h or more, who knows.

Jeepers, peeps. Why are there still people who can't play along with April Fool? Nothing more doofus than someone trying to debunk an April Fool story. It's really junior. All fun ruined. Heaven save us from these fools.

.... and if you throw your invoice away, you avoid paying e-tolls as well. Which is simpler and easier.

I've heard that if you have an M60 mounted on top of your car and fire bullets in the direction of the camera it interferes with their ability to read your license plate.
