Avoiding Eskom is cheaper than ever

‘Cost reflective’…any thoughts to lowering costs?

Ah yes. That would mean less for the people that need to eat, and we can't have, now can we? Better to extract it from the paying public.

Avoiding City power is going to be soon as well, they want to add R553 service and connection charges to prepaid. I mean isn't the point of prepaid so you don't have that issue? Just add it to the tariffs and the higher you go the more the fee is, that would make logical sense.
It's like if a cellular provider still sent you a bill for prepaid with a R90 connection fee

I want to move to prepaid but have been told that they are prohibiting those with solar installations from doing so, how they know you have solar is a mystery though. Going completely off grid for us would require large changes and more investment which I don’t believe is worth it, I am happy to use a fee kWh here and there so have to suck up the unavoidable network and service charges CityPower applies.

Just apply for it, how would they know? What gets me is the R553 fee on prepaid? On top of the tariffs being more anyway

“If you extrapolate from current trends, Eskom will eventually be left with a customer base of people who cannot afford electricity and therefore don’t pay for it,” he warned.
True, but the side effect is that the private sector is slowly making up the electricity shortfall and we’ll probably see and end to load shedding in the next few years. It doesn’t help with Eskom’s cashflow issue though.

I love how the title makes it seem like this is somehow positive vs. something like "Due to unstustainably spiraling energy costs and an ever-weakening grid, options are becoming more limited."

CoJ have proposed the fixed fee before, but was rejected as it affects the low end (township) consumer more.

They can't have a service fee aka meter reading fee on pre-paid.
The other fee is a network/connection fee.

If they do introduce this, then they will have to align the bands and c/kWh.

Ah this is why they have low and high usage tiers now. The township will be on low usage so no fees.

And this change goes into effect on Fool's day!

Petrol prices and electricity prices getting worse, what next? Insurance? Medical? Income tax?

I tell you, the ever raising taxes is the end of South Africa... It kills new opportunities, tenderpreneurs taking the beer and leaves the glass, with the government officials sitting on their hands, have KFC for lunch and supper, drive around in thirsty BMWs, and live in houses they are not paying a cent for? This must end. Now.

You don't carry people over the finishing line - You help them pull themselves over it. So that they learn and grow stronger. Less depended upon you.

There's always another
race that needs to be run. That will never change.
careful!

I love how they always pitch this as "the wealthy" versus "the poors".

**** that noise.

It is the middle class that is having to make a plan to have electricity by forgoing spending, or taking out loans.

Since switching to Solar in 2021 my average CityPower PrePaid consumption is 155kWh/R334 per month.

Does this qualify for low usage tier or do I need to add a few more panels to drop the consumption even lower?

My overall consumption is 810kWh/R2030 per month most of which comes from Solar - an +/-83% Rand saving.

800 000 now pays for 90% of the income tax in SA

20% of Dollar millionaires left in the past 3 years.

Its becoming a no brainer. But yes as for Eskom remember way back they handed out bulbs and geyser blankets to reduce load-shedding. They soon discovered making SA more energy efficient means they make less money. Now with LED that has dropped further..

100W-20W-8.5W per hour per bulb.

My friend paid R2k a month mainly just for his 50W downlighters. Changed them all for 3W LED and he has smiled ever since. 200 bulbs later. Was costly initially but its giving no problems since.

Low usage tier is for indigent people, you'll be a high usage person no matter what
