AWD - Subaru XV vs. Mazda CX-5

Hi Team - hoping I can get some expertise here in choosing between the Subaru XV 2.0 es and the Mazda CX-5 2.5 Individual. More generally looking for something that can get me to hikes (clearance, AWD) in the <R450K range. Roughly same price - R320k for the Subaru and R350k for the Mazda. Feature wise roughly the same although the Mazda 2.5 is 140KW (oooh!) vs. the Subaru 115KW (boo!).

I would say the CX-5 for maintenance, cabin design and long term resale + engine longevity.

The power aspect alone is also a deciding factor, too many of the crossovers and SUVs are available in what I deem underpowered spec. When loaded you should be able to overtake incline or decline.

To be fair, my knowledge on the XV is limited but have personally been looking at the CX5, Corolla Cross and Volvo XC40..each have their pros but depends what and how long you buying for

I would double check that the CX-5 you're looking at is definitely AWD. It's a 2018, the specs say front wheel drive. There is no AWD badging on the rear. The brochure is for the 2022 model, and companies love changing major features in newer models (I.e. a 2018 Individual is not necessarily that similar to the 2022 Individual, which the brochure states is AWD).

I think 350k for a true AWD CX-5 is a steal, being a true medium SUV while the XV is a crossover and is always reliably AWD, being a Subaru). So my money would be on that CX-5 being front wheel drive and you'll have to cough up at least another 100k for the AWD.

Personally I love both cars, at that price point the CX-5 is the winner depending if AWD is not the deciding factor. Though I'd get the XV because AWD.

That Mazda is FWD.

What about an Everest or Fortuner, even in RWD form both will be better off road than the Subaru or Mazda. RWD with a diff lock can actually get your pretty far, at least as far off road as I'd take anything that expensive.
 
Thank you for the great responses particularly the additional options to consider and the flag on FWD. I now need to buy something pretty soon since my 12 year old Honda blew a gasket and is likely not worth fixing.
