Well decide to try out Axxess Lite service (unshaped) and bought 10 gig on Sunday to give it a bash. I'm currently with Telkom (shapped) and go through about 10-15 gigs a month. Did not want to jump on the uncapped band wagon just yet because of all the stories regarding contention ratios and throttled usage. I happy with my current speeds but thought I'd get a fix when going over the pond so to speak.

I'm pretty happy with TELKOM as a ISP the speed even on my shaped account is great but thought I'd give Axxess unshaped (lite) account a try, but must say I'm really disappointed so far. I don't know what I doing wrong but I feel I'm getting shafted royally or my idea of a unshaped account is grossly over estimated in terms of speed. Below are some test I did on my Axxess and Telkom accounts. At the very least I thought I should be getting better overseas performance on a unshaped account vs the Telkom shaped account ? I bought the account mainly for browsing of which 90% is overseas. I did call them up last might and I was told I was on the IS backbone and they were experiencing some problems, IMO I think the support guys are just using this as an excuse to stop the fire. Needless to say I'm a little pissed off ATM.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong I don't know. But I've spent enough time on the inter-webs the past 20 years to know that something does not feel right. I was going to offer a comparison on Telkom but seems those are all capped. My uploads are faster than downloads ?

I got the same response when querying. It is an intermittant thing with me though. There are times when I will get 400k for 2-3 hours and then crawl at 7k for the rest of the day. Not sure what Axxess is doing.
 
My Axxess lite account is absolute rubbish. I wanted to use the account for browsing, but it can't even do that properly.
 
I cancelled my ADSL-lite. In fact I 'cancelled' (stopped paying prepaid) all my Axxess accounts. Even their proper unshaped account was poor in comparison to other ISP's as my 4Mb line was always stuck at 200kB/s.

I've been a long time supporter of Axxess, but in the last few months their service has been extremely poor.
 
I have also canceled my lite account from month end. I would happily pay webafrica their R70 a gig and actually be able to use the bandwidth.
 
Canceling here too, even though it's already been reduced to 1 gig. It would take a month just to use that up.
 
So it might not be shaped or throttled but the contention ratios are so high that you do not get any throughput?????
This sucks....you buy premium BW unshaped/throttled only to be shafted by contention ratios?

PS going international was dismal!
 
Thanks guys, I thought I was maybe doing something wrong glad to know I'm not the only one. IMO this is false advertising. They are using the word "unshaped" in the true sense of the word but in fact the product is far from that. I know what unshaped bandwidth should "perform" like for lack of a better word and it's not what I'm getting.
