Hi All

Rather a Noob here so apologies upfront....

Having survived 3 months with Screamer, I have had enough and a taster of what Uncapped could be like,

But would like to get a REAL ISP with Uncapped @ +- R1K per month

Looking around these are the main options...

http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/is_express/?AFF3A92
http://www.openweb.co.za/uncapped/
http://www.axxess.co.za/uncapped.php

Having ready the sticky - Which ISP to Choose - seeing some are resellers of others :}

My first choice would be Axxess mostly cause they post the top downloaders on the website :}

Busy searching myBB for comments etc etc...

Any comments or suggestions ? On which ISP to choose ?

Thanks

I have a Telkom 4MB Line, Would prefer / need Unshapped as I am keen on torrents and RapidShare Premium Stuff, Recently started playing Modern Warefare and it uses a Steam account ....

Based on the pricing available looks like it would be a 384Kbps or at a push 512Kbps...

I am keen on the after hours 4MB option and daytime @ 384Kbps or at a push 512Kbps.. Looks like the 4MB after Hours more than makes up for the day time throttle back.... Not sure on the Thresholds issue?? Confuses me how they get to +700GB per month with the Thresholds ... ??

Not sure how serious it is to have your own Static IP vs. Dynamic..... Having seen the downside of Dynamic on the Screamer side, Free Download sites are a issue.... I have a RapidShare premium account but not others (yet :}) and popularity/ competition of HotFile, Mega Uploader etc etc... Dynamic IP can have it down side....

As I said somewhere else on the forum - I think it is very much a personal choice with regard to your expectations of ISP and if they can deliver the service you need, budget needs etc. A lot of folks on this forum look to getting top notch after sales support as well. What's more most ISP's these days don't have contracts so you can sign up on a monthly basis and if you are not happy give a month notice and move on.

I just read up on this forum and took the plunge!! Started with Axxess and have never looked back.

Good luck with your searching........ ;)

Web Africa is due to announce new prices in Feb, so I'd hang tight until then. Then I'd choose between WebA and Axxess.

all of them resell IS fo their uncapped service, so youre gonna get the same thing from all of them.

not true.

Service levels from Axxess kicks but. Openweb has no after hour call center, web africa does have it but my call has historically been in a queue after hours the longest at Web Africa

I been pretty disappointed with Openweb TBO... Took advantage of their R399-00 uncapped till the end of the month special. Took them a while to activate the account albeit I did apply on a Saturday. I find the after hours performance of the product pretty inconsistent.. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend them...

Cannot comment on Axxess and Webafrica.

Vodacom has launched a decent uncapped service.

http://www.imagine.co.za/business/uncapped-vodacom.html

On a 384 line the p2p and newsgroups seem to run at about a 3:1 contention... therefore on a 384k line rather than 38kbps you'd get 12kpbs.

Again, this is just a resale of their product but is the cheapest in the country... Imagine/we also have 24/7 online and phone support on weekdays.

That looks very expensive and hardly comparable to Axxess' package

Very expensive in comparison?
You have to let me know what i'm missing here because i don't see it.

384k Imagine - R899 (no limits) Axxess - R999 (5GB throttle every 10 days)
512k Imagine - R1399 (no limits) Axxess - R1499 (10GB throttle everty 10 days)
1024 Axxess - R2699 (20GB throttle every 10 days)
4096 Imagine - R2499 (no limits)

Uncapped 'Express' - isn't uncapped. It's throttled.
A 10 day rolling threshold applies to this account - This means when you use more than the threshold amount during a 10 day period, your line speed will be lowered but not disconnected.

Sorry mate but I think you have this account a bit mixed up. The Axxess uncapped account only gets throttled from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and the rest of the time it runs at full speed according to what ADSL line you have. If you max it out downloading on a 4MB line you can expect to get well over 700GB a month. The Imagine accounts run at only 384Kb the whole time meaning you pay a similar amount to download a little over 100GB if you leave it on 24/7. You can't compare these packages there just so different.

Thanks ppedrick, Agree with Throlled issue but still confused how the top downloaded get +700GB per month, I think the threshold adds up for office hours only ??

A 10 day rolling threshold applies to this account - This means when you use more than the threshold amount during a 10 day period, your line speed will be lowered but not disconnected. This restriction only applies on weekdays from 8am to 8pm. - You will still have the FULL line speed after 8pm on weekdays and the weekend.

The only other concern is that I Would prefer Axxess cause it on the SAIX backbone and OpenWeb / Web Africa are IS based, Dont think SAIX are "monitoring" torrents as much as IS, Saw another user getting download copyright letters, which i know are a load of BS but would rather avoid getting them...

I think I will go with Axxess and then see what happens in the market but a little hesitant cause burnt my fingers with Screamer experience so will not try be on the Bleeding edge of broadband pricing wars....Imagine / Vodacom seem new to the ADSL market.....

I guess the benefits of OpenWeb is not Thresholds during the day.....mmmmhhhhh - Flip a coin Stuff....

Axxess = R999 - 384kb during day and Threshold of5GB... and 4MB after Hours
OpenWeb = R1299 - 256kb during day and 4MB after hours...

I get your point - you have to forgive me as I'm from the UK.
An ADSL line is an ADSL line and all these little tricks to abuse the system aren't necessary.

We've had a quick look in to it and will also be offering this account as soon as we confirm pricing.

Cheers

Yup - we are also pretty new to the home consumer market.
We usually deal with larger clients but as we get good pricing and rates I have been brought in to develop the company in to other market sectors. The ADSL resale model seemed hte most sensible to start from as we have all the technology in place already and access to some of the best pricing.
From here we'll likely add in VoIP, 3G, Wireless hotspots and all the things that I used to take for granted in the UK - all from one bill and a half decent price.

Cheers

The Axxess 384 Fibre+ account is on the IS backbone afaik.

You hit your threshold on Axxess on your first night of downloading(if you max the line) but you're throttled down to 192Kb from Mon-Fri 8am to 8pm, the rest of the time you have highest attainable line speeds you can achieve. If the difference in speed from 192 to openwebs 256 is important to you then I can understand the extra R300 a month but I've been on Axxess a couple of months and the service runs perfectly for me and I've downloaded just over 700GB this month already. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to (or wants to)download a lot of content at probably the cheapest per GB price in SA.
