Axxess, upgrading everyone for free, because Telkom upgraded them, then a month later start charging you for you upgraded account ... marketing genius?

In anticipation of the Telkom line speed upgrades we launched a special called The Big Summer Scoop, where we upgraded your account size free of charge to match the size of your line. The Big Summer Scoop special however is coming to an end on the 19th of January, this means that as from the 20th of Jan your line speed will stay the same, but your account size will return to what you had originally.

Say for instance if you originally had a 2Mbps Line with a 2Mbps Uncapped account, your line speed was upgraded to 4Mbps and we upgraded your Uncapped account size to 4Mbps free of charge to match that of your line speed so that you could fully benefit from the line speed upgrade.

You were not charged more or less, you have always been charged exactly the same as you were originally paying. Should you choose not to stay on the upgraded account size you will still be paying the same amount, but you will have a 4 Mbps line with a 2Mbps uncapped account.

Your monthly payment will only go up should you wish to stay on the upgraded account size.

I hope the above clears up any confusion that may arise.

My account used to be a 4/10Mbps account getting around 8-9Mbps when things were running smoothly and paying 375 a month.

Is the 4/10Mbps package now being replaced by separate 4Mbps and 10Mbps packages and priced separately?
If I stick to a 4Mbps package, will I still get 10Mbps after hours?

I'm now getting around 5 - 6Mbps after switching to the 10Mbps package whereas the 4/10Mbps used to give me 8-9Mbps: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3223843965

Hi JanVladimirMostert,

Are you currently on a 4Mbps uncapped account or a 10Mbps uncapped account? The 4mbps package will max out at 4mbps day or night.

Please PM us your Axxess account number so that we can better answer your query.

Regards,

The Axxess Lady

So, if you ordered a 10Mbps account @ R375 while the special is on, you will automatically have to pay R495 in Feb?
Wish I knew this before I signed up.

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/90411-free-uncapped-adsl-account-upgrades.html

Axxess announced today (28 October 2013) that it will upgrade all its uncapped ADSL accounts free of charge, which coincides with Telkom’s planned ADSL line speed upgrades.

“With the announcement that Telkom will be increasing broadband ADSL connection speeds over the next few months, we are taking the initiative by upgrading uncapped account speeds free of charge,” Axxess said.

“Axxess clients will be the first to benefit from this revolutionary move, giving them the opportunity to experience faster, better ADSL speeds once the Telkom upgrade is complete.”

Axxess explained that, as an example, 4Mbps uncapped ADSL clients will be upgraded free of charge to 10Mbps.

The following table provides an overview of the new uncapped ADSL prices from Axxess.

No mention of it being temporary - not in the press releases; not on mybroadband news articles; not on Google as far as I can find; not in the threads where Axxess had every opportunity to indicate this; and nothing on your website about this as far as I can find.

Wow, wow, wow. This is despicable...

Aha, so this was a very temporary offer, subject to a "maybe we will revise this in January" disclaimer right at the bottom. Or maybe not. How the hell can you provide such an offering, without making it abundantly clear to customers and distributors of your press releases that this is temporary, and subject to price changes at your discretion, whenever you feel like it, around January? What the hell kind of terms are those in any case? Terms are intended to be simple and precise, not arbitrary and at your discretion whenever you feel like it.

So those who fell prey to this bait and switch marketing campaign will now be subjected to a price increase they didn't agree to, or will have to downgrade their package with Axxess.

Luckily customers have until the 24th (debit orders) and last day of the month (for EFT payments) to cancel their services, which is one thing Axxess does right. No 30 day notice period. Although their terms do state that "Emailing your cancellation request does not guarantee that your service will be cancelled"

The sign up page has a notice that the offer is subject to revision.

R495 for 10Mbps is still quite good.

None of the articles on this subject indicated as such, and I can only assume that this is based on them dishing out false or incomplete information.

Not a single thread here or elsewhere on the issue addresses this point. It was not clear to people.

Whatever the price now, that is irrelevant. They entered into what appears to be a bait and switch marketing campaign...

Yes, that is correct, but should you wish to do so you can downgrade to 4Mbps at R325 p/m. We have also significantly reduced our Bundle pricing (includes ADSL line rental and data):

10 Mbps Uncapped Bundle: R799 p/m
4Mbps Uncapped Bundle: R499 p/m

The price has increased from the Big Summer Scoop special price, but is still lower than it was before the Big Summer Scoop.

10Mbps BEFORE Big Summer Scoop: R675 p/m
10 Mbps AFTER Big Summer Scoop: R495 p/m

So you will still be paying LESS than before The Big Summer Scoop special.

We have always been open and honest with new clients regarding the fact that the Big Summer Scoop was a special for a limited time only and would be revised end of Jan 2014. We have stated this on Newsletters that went out to clients, as well as our website.

We are sorry to hear that you feel cheated, please be assured that this was not our intention We tried to keep the new prices as competitive within the market as possible.

How the hell can you call it a free speed upgrade when all it was, was a trial? Had you really been open and honest, this little fact wouldn't have been hidden behind a "maybe it will, maybe it won't" term which is quite frankly, pathetic.

Why didn't you correct news sites running the story as if it were an actual upgrade, which let's face it, it isn't/wasn't?

It is a classic bait and switch campaign and you should be ashamed of yourselves...

Ok thank you.

That said, I have looked around at what other ISPs resell bandwidth on the MTN network and I found the following:
BuzyBuy 10Mbps on MTN @ R449
OpenWeb Titan 10Mbps @ R399

Now the openweb is a limited special, but usually they let you stay on the special price, they just limit the amount of accounts they sell at that price. I have a friend who signed up for that account, and it is on the MTN network, though it is not stated on their website. I am not a huge fan of Openweb's cheating tactics on some of their accounts but that is the best price, closest to the summer scoop I can find.

Edit: Openweb confirmed that price will stay the same here

Why not just keep us at these speeds??

Dear Axxess Lady, I've had a 10Mbps uncapped line long before Axxess offered 10Mbps uncapped packages, the max Axxess was offering at the time was a 4Mbps package, but my 4Mbps package was giving 10Mbps speeds most of the time (around 8 - 9Mbps)
Now that I've "upgraded" to an actual 10Mbps package (now that Axxess is offering it), I'm paying more and only getting 6Mbps.

I'll contact the technicians for more info.

UPDATE: The Advertising Standards Authority today ruled against Axxess in this matter, and found that Axxess' advertising suggested a permanent benefit when it was in fact a trial, and that this form of advertising is misleading. The ASA found Axxess to be in contravention of Clause 4.2.1 of the Advertising Standards Code Of Practice which reads:

4.2.1Misleading claims

Advertisements should not contain any statement or visual presentation which, directly or by implication, omission, ambiguity, inaccuracy, exaggerated claim or otherwise, is likely to mislead the consumer.

The ASA have instructed Axxess not to run similar campaigns in future, and to ensure that future campaigns are clear and unambiguous. The fact that this trial (advertised as a permanent upgrade) has come to end means that the ASA has taken no further action...
