We are expecting our first baby boy in January - I have been tasked with finding some sort of baby gadget to monitor him.

Anyone recommend a decent brand and place where I can purchase one?
Do you recommend sound and video or just sound?

Try and get one with the breathing mat for the cot. Its slips under the matress and monitors the baby's breathing. if the baby stops breathing, or moves off the mat, an alarm will sound.

What exactly are you wanting to monitor? Baby should be sleeping in your room. At least for the first 6 months. Big factor in reducing SIDS. But if you must have a monitor I've been told the Angelcare ones are good, but remember they're there to soothe the parents.

haha, seems their server needs more memory:

I have managed 8 months + with no baby monitor.... But my daughter, like her mother, has a powerful set of lungs so when shes awake and angry - We KNOW! We got the sleep wedge and NEVER put her on her tummy so we were all good.

Otherwise just get ur lad a cell phone and teach him how to send a please call me!

We have the one without the mat (I do not have to apologise for my lack of concern with preventing SIDS as nobody knows what causes it) and our unit can work on both battery and mains (important feature). My youngest is 2mths and the monitor at least allows you to have a normal life.

Actually the sleep wedges are a saftey concern in the United Nanny States (why no suprise) and parents where recently advised to not use them. Well we continue to use ours without a problem.

It's your first born, don't get a baby monitor yet.

You will end up paying a fortune for it just to have the baby in your room anyway so it will be a waste of cash ;)

True pitbull, but try explaining that to the expectant mother!

My peve was the "rush" to decorate the babys room, a room that remained unvisited for months!

Hehe, I know exactly what you're talking about :D
It's funny, one tries to prepare so you are ready when the little one arrives. All the gadgets, toys, money and what not can't prepare you for when they arrive home. Seriously though, I would suggest you only spend on the must have's. The rest you can buy as you need them. I spent a fotune on things for our first child. The twins (my 3rd and 4th children) are now 1 year and 6 months old and I still have stuff we bought when my daughter was born (she is 6 now) which was never even opened.

So true. We got ours 2nd hand at a Baby Go Round for a 1/3rd of the new price. It even came in its original box.

Our daughter is 2mths next week and we have used the monitor about a dozen times. It has its uses but I agree that if you don't already have, then don't buy it.

I think those are called the angel care monitors...

Get one of them :)

+1 The Angel Care is one of the premium brands and the sensor pad really works (peace of mind). Without a doubt the best purchase we ever made for the little one.

Angel Care.

We use ours every single day and night (He was sleeping in his own bed from the 2nd week).

Base station sits in his cot, and the portable unit comes with us to the lounge / kitchen. It's the one that detects movement, breathing, temperature (Too hot, too cold) and sound.

It's next to our bed when we sleep, and we changed the sensitivity so you dont hear EVERY SINGLE cough / snort in case you are an epic light sleeper.

We wouldn't have it any other way, it's peace of mind, and it just works.

Get one.

We just had one with sound.

Besides being nice for when she was asleep at night it was also very handy when we were in the garden and she was asleep or when we went to visit family/friends and she needed a nap.

What exactly are you going to do if the baby stops breathing?
