when SMSs were free, and the web was but a pup...

You could send an SMS to a cell phone by just emailing [email protected] (or something to that effect). Now I know that this would be unbelievably abused these days, so it's probably been shut down for years already, but is there any cheap and simple (no contracts or credit cards, etc.) way to send an SMS by email.

I don't want to send hundreds a day, I'd just like my UPS to be able to SMS me when the power fails, and my video server to SMS me when it detects a problem, etc.

Probably not, but I thought I'd try. :)

number @ voda.co.za still works for me last time I tried it. You are limited to 3? or something per day. But first you need to register that email account. To do that just send yourself an sms from that email, await the reply and follow the instructions.

With MTN you get a free email account ([email protected]) which alerts you by sms to incoming mail:

MTNLoaded> you have received a new email from: whoever@wherever Subject: whatever

Your internet connection is also wired to the UPS?

Thanks okes, that's exactly what I was looking for. My UPS just sent me an SMS. :D

bwana, everything is connected to the UPS and the internet.

Edit: The [official vodacom] site to register is a bit dodgy, with an expired certificate and all, but I registered anyway. What could possibly go wrong?

Second edit: I think that I must set up an email address for each device, otherwise I could run out of free SMSs. Will work on that later.
