Back/ Joint pains

You should try some yoga or stretching exercises especially for the back, first thing in the morning. In the evening again if you can. Really helps me with my back problems. The gym ball also helps alot.
Yoga is amazing, everyone should do a little session everyday. Helps to stretch everything, keep things in sync and mobile. Some really good apps, Track Yoga is the best I have tried, think it's on iOS and Android, I use the Android app.

A bad back is a bad back and no amount of muscle changes would alter that.

Which is why I don't like the idea of people being so liberal with the exercise ball advice as it's been proven to do more hard than good.

It's called an EXERCISE ball for a reason, not a chair.
Good core muscles help any back and especially one with inherent issues. Granted find out the cause before jumping into exercises but the muscles will need to be strengthened to provide adequate support.

Stress is often a fundamental issue with back pain, that also has to be addressed, not just the muscle tension but the lifestyle that stress puts your body into, hunched in front of a computer screen for hours, slouched in a chair in front of the TV after a long day etc
