I always thought people complaining from back pain are hypochondriacs, but boy, does it hurt!

I had a baby a year ago and I suspect this caused the problem ... constantly bending over to change a diaper, pick up the baby, pick up toys, etc etc has been a killer!

It's mainly a lower back pain but now I seem to have "twisted" my spine, because on the upper left hand, between the neck and the shoulder blade is this incredible pain. It inhibits movement and I am constantly aware of it.

Must get to the doctor, but wonder what they can possibly do about it ?

Chiro rather - they are gods.

PM me if you need the number of a great chiro near the campus - see you are in JHB

Stretch more. And squat down using your knees, keeping your back straight, don't bend at the waist.

Yes, there are correct ways of bending. Easier said than done if you are a parent though ... when dealing with a child, I daresay the correct way of bending is not exactly uppermost in you mind !

Chiro is treating my wife for her Child issues - bending ect...

Losing weight really helped me... The gym work to achieve that was probably a second factor, but carrying 10kg less around with you everywhere is huge!

With the two boys I found my back pain increased a lot - not that I really have it normally - but I think the cause is that all baby equipment is set to the least optimal height for posture. And you have to hold a position for prolonged periods feeding, bathing, changing, interacting etc. Compactums are the worst culprits. Once they outgrew that phase my back improved a lot.

Physio! At least they are properly medically trained. Unlike Chiro's which are more homoeopaths.

What he said. I havent had much luck with physio's and back pain.
Can also give the name of a decent chiro if you require. I would also take up something like pilates or get a pilates ball and do some core strengthening exercises to help with your back issues.

Lastly, look at changing your bed, it did wonders for me

Go and see a physio - they can do wonders. You will be wasting your time seeing a GP.

That's what I meant - I always get confused :o

Go see a physiotherapist rather than chiropractor.

What do you call an Indian who specializes in the body’s muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems?

A Charopractor!

bluno - did you have an epidural? if so this could also be the cause of it as well. sometimes having an epidural has certain side effects afterwards.

I've been suffering with back pains for a while now, and no, people who complain about it aren't hypochondriacs :) Also lower back, and on occasion also the sharp pains between spine and shoulder blade. In my case it was caused by a change in bed.

As mentioned above, go and see a physio. They will rub out the affected areas and give you a bunch of exercises that target the area which is in pain. It's essential that you don't skip these, you'll have to do it regularly to keep the pain away.

They're hacks IMO. Been to a few and all they do is put that electrode machine on because they're too lazy to rub out the specific area where the pains are, and they don't give you the correct exercises to do (some don't give you any at all!). Then they keep asking you to return the next week, and before you know it you've depleted your medical aid savings. Not cool.

Just find a chiro that does Torque Release - none of that old fashion cracking of joints ect.

Sounds like it could be related to your rhomboid muscles, they play a huge part in a woman's physical activity with children.
It can be anything from increased breast size, to bad posture when lifting, to lack of exercise prior to, during and after childbirth.

See a physio, and if you are inclined a course of acupuncture treatment.

In the meantime, if you have one of those microwavable "bean bags" use it, the heat should help relieve some of the discomfort.
