So, I've recently moved jobs. One of the best things about my previous job was that I used my own computer for everything and for the past year, that's been exclusively linux.

Now, I've got to use company hardware and software. Linux is completely out of the question. I can't even log into the VPN from home on my linux-powered computers. :(

And I've got to get used to Windows all over again. I'm not a Windows-hater - Imoved to linux because I was curious and it was fun to learn. But now that I'm used to linux, I feel like I have one hand behind me back when I try things the windows way.

For instance, windows has only one desktop! It took me two weeks to get out f the habit of Ctrl-Alt--> to change workspace. Try that on a windows computer, and see what happens and how irritating it is. :)

Ag, there so many little things. Windows is just so inflexible and booooring after being used to the linux way.

(This is not an anti-windows rant, just frustration at not being able to do things the way the I would like to, after using linux. As usual, use what works for you.)

@ chiskop - good luck!

You can also have PPTP support on Linux for windows clients. Or you can use openvpn (which is also supported by winders).

Welcome (back) to the dark side! :D

If you are referring to the Alt-Ctrl--> flipping your screen it is unique to Intel graphics chipsets, but yes I can understand your surprise.

Good luck with the adjustment.

No, it's not that I can't connect to the VPN - I'm not allowed. I have to have some security check of my computer, they won't even look at anything non-winders. :(

Well, maybe you could take a screenie of your linux at home and post it on you windows at work.

All wont be lost.

LOL. Like having an old blankie with you at all times. :D

I see your company has gone for the locked door in an open field policy. I'm a Windows junkie and even I know letting a linux box into your network (via VPN) doesn't cause any major security issues. But policy are policy!

If you're using XP check out Miscrosft's free Virtual Desktop Manager

Yeah, I've been using Linux at work almost exclusively for the past couple of months, at home as well. I don't like it when I am forced to boot into Windows at work. Unfortunately we use some proprietary software that only works with Windows and Internet Explorer.

It used to work in Firefox on Windows, but even that doesn't work anymore. They changed the authentication procedure, which now requires settings, and certificates, that only seem to work in IE, haven't figured out how to get it working in FF yet.

Did they at least give you a reason why you must use windows?

Well what about running your windows environment on a virtual machine?

I have been able to get everything working using InnoTek VirtualBox. There is even a Open Source version with some features missing(The biggest for me was booting from a partition and usb support, but that might be implemented already).

You could also try to sneak the Virtual Windows past security(I will not recommend this if it will get you fired) or like bwana recommended run your GNU/Linux distro in a virtual machine on windows(I would recommend VirtualBox).

Regards,

Well, install Microsoft Power Shell. At least you will have a proper console with tab completion. Its amazing how MS aliased bash commands with this one :-)

I know what you mean.. ;)

One feature found on most Linux systems (really a X feature I guess) that I really love, is the easy text copying / pasting feature with the mouse, just highlight the text you want, hover the mouse pointer where you want to paste and press the mouse wheel button and it pastes it right in.

I use that all the time, and whenever I'm unfortunate enough to have to do something on a Windows system (not often thankfully) I find myself trying to copy and paste in this way.. :o

Dang you could have shared that earlier !

Check out the IE Tab plugin for FF. It's not ideal but at least you can stay in FF and have Tabs for example even if IE6 is installed on you Windows machine :)

Yeah, it because that's the way it is. :)

Ah, I'm not really interested in trying to cheat my way past IT. I guess I'll get used to windows again (tho my home computers will remain windows-free, and fun).

I mean, lots of people seem to be able to use windows...
