Backend bandwidth poor in residential areas

DOes anyone know why the backend bandwidth for Vodacom's HSDPA/3G is so poor in residential areas compared to office parks?
At work I can get 5Mb/s download, at home in Bryanston, I can't even get 256kb/s

I don't think we get what we pay for from Vodacom, they are selling a connection rate, not the capacity you will be able to download at, which is decieving.

Not so sure about that. The way I see it they sell you the rigth to connect to their network, which, at various places, is capable of net connection speeds up to various capacities. That capacity is shared between the users on the network, and cannot be guarranteed to be an exact figure.

Back to the subject at hand.....Vodacom is in a process of connecting our BTS's to Vodacoms own backhaul....this might be fibre (where possible) or Microwave (where possible). This of course is a time consuming and expensive exercise, but I do think this is very high on their priority list as it will save them a lot of money and give them more control over the network etc. You will see many Palm Trees in Joburg with adorable little microwave dishes attached to them.

I'd say you have a localised problem. Best is to log a fault with 155. I use my 3G primarily in a residential area and always get good speeds.

Which area you in? Maybe we need to have a look at the problem from a network point of view.

If you remember the Sandton Cronicle a month or two back there was uproar about MTN's mini sites on top of light poles? That was because there is poor coverage in Bryanston and I am sure VC has a similar issue and residents dont want more towers so the issue wont be rectified. It also means that the contention ratio per site will be higher due to the fewer sites.

Beverly Gardens, Bryanston ext 5, I've reported this fault 3 times now in 5 months with no progress, just irritating sms's telling me it's being looked at without any resolution date or feedback.

I live in P.E in one of the main business areas (Newton park) and I have the same issue. I can barely do anything with my 3G connection and nobody at Vodacom can help me. I have noticed it getting considerably worse over the last few months. I thought they were supposed to be increasing speeds not decreasing.
