Hi
I live in a general low income area with no reliable internet, fiber is probable a good few more years away. How does one get decent backhaul line in from another area..
regards

So i managed to get feedback from a satelite internet service provider. Does anybody have experience with such a service as a backhaul internet line in. How reliable is the technology. What else is there to look out for

Capetown nothern suburbs. I dont hav alot of options though

No man, you have the cat by the tail.

Satellite internet isn't rubbish at all, it's just expensive.

I've used Inmarsat BGAN, Thuraya, Inmarsat Hughes (Ku-band) and MANY fixed C-band solutions.

KU-Band - for what it is (a mobile, go anywhere internet/telephony solution) it's absolutely fantastic.

nothing else gives you internet connectivity (and the ability to make a POTS phone call) while in the niuddle of the Serengeti or on top of Everest.

C-Band satellite services are even better - with much higher bandwidth rates (than KU band) but also much more expensive - and they're not very mobile.
C-band dishes are on the big side & you (normally) need a rack to house your equipment.

b.t.w., many ATM's (worldwide) use KU band satellite dishes on the ATM's roof.

The technology is reliable as can be, the problem is that it's not cheap and also not fast.

Yup you've got it right that it's the only thing that can give you internet ANYWHERE which is exactly why it's expensive.

Mobile being most expensive and fixed being cheaper.

The new tech like GlobalExpress is much faster and also cheaper...but that cheap is also relative to other options and still not "cheap" like ADSL cheap.

You go satellite for a lack of other options, not because it's the better one to have.

Also the ATM's and such are generally VSAT which is actually.

Oh and BGAN is actually L-band not Ku-band. Ku-band can't operate with such a small antenna. Also why it's so slow at the expense of being so mobile.

thanks for correcting me on the L-Band / KU issue
my bad.

granted, the last time I touched a BGAN was in 2007

guess I'm forgiven.?

:-)

Belhar. But looks like that company not coming back to me. I managed to get wifi link with good signal. Thx for comments.

SauRoNZA - some assistance please. I am in need of an occasional mobile satellite solution (SA and Botswana) for my own personal mobile 'office' (2 x laptops, VoIP, occasional video conferencing and general internet usage). Are you able to recommend an ISP? And which band do you recommend I need to get or am I limited to only one band considering I need to be mobile - and if so which band?
TIA

Most of the hardware only works on one band yes and that depends mostly on how portable you want to be.

L-band is the smallest footprint but also the slowest generally.

I’ll PM you a contact you can reach out to.
