Hi guys,

I did something really dumb, I practically backed up everything except for my e-mail (outlook pst file) and i've reinstalled windows and now am running EasyRecovery Professional that I got from a friend.

It's taking FOREVER (started it last night at about 12ish) and it's only on "Building Tree"

How long is this going to take on this 320GB HDD?

I'm just wanting to get my .pst file back so I hope it works but I need someone who maybe knows to tell me a ± eta

Well, I did it from within Windows XP Setup - the delete partition and format quick to NTFS.

I went from VISTA to XP.

I'm sure that you will be able to find some file fragments of your pst file but its a bit fishy that its taking so much time. Usually you can find out if the stuff can be recovered within a few minutes.

Just dont install any apps or copy any files to the disk before you have your pst back.

I called a friend and he said that it could actually take as long as it is taking, but the progrma works so I should just leave it and I should recover the pst file, hopefully, if its not a big .pst file (I think it might be a 200mb file) :(

Don't stress. It always takes very long because it is reading every bloody byte on the drives step by step multiple times. If you have many small files on it, it'll slow the process down significantly. I waited many hours last time too...although 13h is starting to get a bit on the long side.

The fact that you did a quick format not a normal one is probably going to save you skin. Vista->XP is also a good sign because the XP install is smaller than the vista one.

Try Magic Recovery Professional, it only takes a few minutes, try this before EasyRecovery as it is much quicker.

i stopped and started the backup, (did a save thingy) but it's still taking forever... i hope this is a good sign.

Special mention of thanks goes out to user: mh348 who gave me the program Magic Recovery Professional.

That worked, I found my PST file and now I'm so happy!

Thanks buddy!
