Who wants to know?
OK guys, im setting up a backup server with multiple accounts. I was thinking of setting up an FTP server (linux) and then loading backup software on the clients PC/server that makes incremental backups and sends them via FTP to the server.

But i heard that you get a app that is web based where the client can log into via their browser and backup and restore from there?

any help please, its kinda urgent. :o

Have you looked at the various backup software packages available or perhaps appliances?

An unreliable backup solution is worse than not having anything in place.

Why allow clients to backup there data, your just creating loads of work, you need to centralize backups to one point/media.

Your opinions will be greatly appreciated. Currently im deploying NAS with drive mirroring and soon to be online storage.

Any other suggestions?

Are you confusing PC clients and real clients (i.e. people)? Im talking abt real people here in different businesses.

Have anyone used backup software that backups to an email address? With gmail you get a nifty free 2.8GB online space.

You do realize that speed is not going to be existing in any form. If you're serious about backups, go for something like Veritas NetBackup, or Networker.

These backup software is not cheep, but they do come with support.

Veritas is a good option. It is worth getting a backup expert to help you as there are many things to consider, such as the backup/restore windows of opportunity, whether your backup is for archival or user finger trouble reasons, the size of the backups, the speed of the network, the number of users, amongst others.

Other things to consider are to move the data from the user machines to a file server and to back that up. If your users are on a WAN, then consider using servers at various points and backing those up.

Finally, I'd really suggest that trying to cobble a home made solution is very risky.

A more detailed explanation of your configuration and design objectives will allow formites to be more specific.
