Backup software

Thanks for the all the recommendations.... Much appreciated...

Everyone seems to recommend something different so I guess it comes down to personal preference...

As per my first post, I'd like software that backs up my whole drive (EVERYTHING) and then after the backup, will let me be able to delete parts of the backup... If that makes sense?

Safe Data Backup will let you do that. It will just backup / copy the files that you deleted everytime it runs that backup. I would have thought it would be easier to just exclude filetypes / folders -- for example, backup folder X on Monday to a browsable folder structure and maintain 2 increments of modified files, backup folder Y on Tuesday to a .zip archive with 1 increment and exclude .iso files, backup folder Z on Wednesday... etc... ...

I use Robocopy and a batch file to tell it where the file are to backup, and the destination of the backup.

It's part of windows vista and 7 and very quick when you have set it up.

Does Cobian support auto backup on events like the insertion of a external drive?

If one mounts an image how is it mounted? Does it appear as another drive in My Computer?
Yes, its mounted through the Acronis software and yup it shows up as a new drive.
Can one delete a file from a backup image or is it read-only?

AFAIK it depends on how you mount it.

Can it backup locked files that are in use by the system or another program?

Well, I only ever backup my user profile - docs, pics, mail, etc, and it does that admirably. No point backing up anything else IMO. In win 7, the only two files it never backs up are ntuser.log and ntuser.dat - they are always in use by the OS so I guess the answer to your question is no.

I am just so lucky I make system image of my drives. My main OS drive crashed and Windows 7 saved the day by restoring everything to exactly how it was.

same format as in windows

but it works well for our company, in terms of exchange/sql/etc, will even go as far as registry on workstations if the need exists, and for $99 , its well priced

What are you recommending?

Todobackup doesn't allow one to edit the backup image afterwards... which I want to do...
As far as I know, the new version of todo backup allows you to edit the image file and delete files from the backup after the backup has completed...
Just try the new ones...
