Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a good system backup option for Windows 7. I currently have a HDD attached to a router and would like to use that HDD for backup. What software would you recommend getting. I would like to backup the whole system as supposed to just emails, document etc. Thanks. :)

I make use of ShadowProtect. It's worth the cost in my eyes. You can set it up to make a full backup once a week for instance and then do incremental backups the rest of the week or however suits you.

+1 above is a solid solution.

We however use http://www.genie9.com/, only due to it being the best we used overall and is also recommended to our client base.

Should you look at Genie9, I will only recommend the Backup Manager versions, should you not be interested in the “cloud” otherwise the Timeline versions has greatly matured.

Have a look at Symantec System Recovery

I use the server version at work and it is excellent. You can do a live full disk image which can then be restored to bare metal, dissimilar hardware or a virtual machine. There is a trial version that you can download.

Currently using Acronis True Image Home 2010 build 6.029 - used it for a few years now and does a full weekly backup of my server and PC OS drive and a few data drives - no hassles so far and easy to use with various options.

Not sure what the latest versions are like though - I'll give ShadowProtect a look as it seems highly recommended.

CrashPlan. A nice online option. We had a flood and all equipment was damaged. .. of it was not for the online backup all would have been lost.

:)Hi howardB,have you ever tried restoring your OS to a brand new HDD? if so how was it?
Did you buy it on the web? Our ROE has made it quite expensive these days.

Hi pedruid,
It works really well to a new HDD, no issues. Still using it daily.

I use Cobian backup works well and you can setup to email you a logfile of each backup, it is not an image, but you could image the drive once and then only copy the data.

Just a thought.

Thanks, where did you buy it and how much?

Bought it on the web in 2009/2010 - really can't remember what I paid for it (could have been R300-R450) - agree that the ROE is crazy at the moment, although it's still less than R550 converted - not too bad.

What hard drive make do you have - if Western Digital, maybe check the Acronis True Image WD Edition version here - not sure if works for other drive makes though but worth a try (Seagate, Samsung, etc)... have a look at the features and release notes to see if it may help.
