BACKUPS NOT WORKING

IS there any software Freeware that you can recommend for an IT Idiot such as me that i can use to back my system up?
Im stucked with the idiotic software from microsoft....
I keep on trying to do backups....

either
- System boots up automatically
- Stupid error messages saying some asswipe program is open - i have NOTHING open

SOS!
Please help!
