I have 3 bantam hens and a rooster in my backyard, completely free-range of course. They are pets, so I will never slaughter any of them, but the eggs are amazing!

Please share your stories, tips and tricks.

Only free-range chickens we ever owned got eaten :o
You can't beat fresh slaughtered chicken. I have to admit the first time I sat in on a slaughter holding the chicken's legs. I didn't eat chicken again for months :o

If you keep pitbulls in the yard you should probably not even try to keep chickens. :) Someone should have warned you. :)

3 mths back I bought 4 dozen eggs from my local veggie store tha where traditional free range (no special feed, etc). So dissapointed I could not get them again as they are just so much nicer than your traditional free range (worked on a free-range chicken farm so I know about the finer details).

So you won't slaughter the chickens to eat them because they're pets... yet you feel comfortable eating their unborn (probably fertilized) children? o.0

Yes!

There's no way I can look after 20 chickens.

P.S.: I'm so sick of the "you eat meat but you are against hunting" argument. It is getting really old. I don't like pointing a gun at animals and shooting them... if you do, whoopie-ding. 99% of the world agree with you, so get over yourself.

Happy whatever!

Edit2: Even though the eggs may be fertilized, the embryo only starts growing once the hen decides to lie on top of them (brood). They normally lay quite a few eggs (10, 12.... or more) before they become broody.

I saw title and saw Barnyard chickens. I laughed and thought 'Get a cow to look after them.' Must be after effects of last night.

None. What a stupid comment.

You have a problem with the fact that I don't want to slaughter my pets. Then you agree with some stupid argument that has nothing to do with the "price of eggs". Some moral high ground stupid irrelevant an uninformed argument. Now, that's stupid.

No I don't.

Let me put it this way. I wouldn't make wool from my cats moulted fur. I just think it is wrong. IMHO

Anyway, maybe I'm overreacting. It is just that when people discuss stupid cars, stupid sport, stupid WoW and many other stupid topics, I stay out of those threads. Why do certain people always feel that they have to turn every thread into a f****** philosophical debate?

I was hoping that people who raise chickens would reply, even if they wanted to discuss the most humane way kill a chicken... that would have been okay. Instead, I get a bunch of *******s trying to be clever.

Please, close and delete this f******* thread for Jesus' sake!

My thoughts exactly.

You guys are just being stupid ;)

Eating an egg has fark all to do with slaughtering chickens. Even if the eggs have a little sperm in them they still all good to eat. People who harvest free range chicken eggs do so daily, meaning there is no embrio what so ever anyway. The Embrio can't grow if it's not being nested by the hen.

And the argument about not wanting to kill his pets:

People in China eat dogs, but they don't slaughter their pet dogs. So it makes 100% sense.

*Being said, I doubt I have ever tasted a difference between free range eggs and the rest. I will keep that in mind next time I have eggs and will try and taste a difference. We don't have chickens but sure I can find free range somewhere?

Don't get so over hyped. You get the town-boy idiots everywhere. They probably do not even know where milk comes from, the dairy of course. They would probably never drink fresh "hot" milk from the source.

I tried to keep some bantams but they died because of disease and snake bite.

Where do your chickens sleep adrianx? We had a couple places but what worked nicley for egg laying ( unless you want to run around hunting eggs ) was those old rubber dustbins. Tip them on their side, put some soft stuff or twigs and leaves and the hens will happily lay their eggs there.

In general however our stupid birds thought it was great to nest in a low lemon tree in our yard. They took that over a coop any day, no idea why.
