Bad Driving thread

Wish there was a way to rig something with which you can inject oil into your exhaust manifold for instant, thick smoke.

Will work a treat if you get some funky driver getting high on your exhaust fumes...

Lol, I have to admit though, I've almost been caught out by robots like that before.

Those new traffic lights are completely stupid and only serve to increase traffic congestion. The idiot who came up with the idea should be kicked in the head repeatedly.

This morning, coming in to Durban on the N2 - a guy on an orange Vespa came on to the road from Queensburgh, where he then cut across into the fast lane (maximum speed on the Vespa is about 72!!), and then a cretin in a blue Kia Rio proceeded to drive approximately 2 inches from his mudguard, making the situation even worse.

The fool on the Vespa also was wearing a loose zip up jacket which then let go and was billowing out behind him like Superman's cape!! Then, he realised that the fast lane was possibly too fast for him, and he tried cutting back to the middle, where nobody would let him in - nobody had been killed by the time I took the Spaghetti offramp, but I am now waiting to hear about the accident that took place down the road!

This is where I would have loved to have a dash camera, as I could have gone viral on Youtube!!

This morning's list:
  • Isuzu bakkie cutting infront of me at 120km/h
  • Mazda bakkie overtaking on the shoulder of the N2 at Khayalitsha, doing about 100km/h; people walking on that same shoulder
  • Renault Sandero driver with one hand on the steering and operating his iPhone with his other hand
  • Honda CIvic, lady driver, combing her hair while driving. She actually drove with a comb in the one hand.

Sounds funny as shyte haha!

Driving to Pretoria from Sandton on the N1 earlier today. I was in the far right lane with cruise set at 120kph passing most traffic. Then, as what usually happens every 20 seconds, someone comes up at 130kph+ and gets a bit too close behind me. So for the umpteenth time I indicate and move over as soon as I get a gap between the slower 100-110kph drivers in the second last lane.

Thank goodness I had my eye on the side mirror and blind side. Some bakkie with one of those metal canopies came flying past from behind at probably 140+kph from the middle/left lane cutting into my lane from his side as I was also turning into it. I had to swerve half back into the fast lane and allow him to cut through as he had no intention of slowing down or indicating. I of course could not see him coming at first over the slower traffic I had passed.

Seen that happen a lot these days. Got a clown on the N12 just after Edenvale the other day doing speeds well above the speed limit cutting from the right hand lane to overtake "slower moving cars". Couldn't even indicate. Was in the left hand lane trying to go right, and had to swerve far left due to this idiot not knowing how to use his indicators.

It's obvious that most of the problems on the roads are related to a complete lack of enforcement since the traffic trolls are more interested in camping out under bridges on their fat arses behind cameras, or eating Chicken Licken in their Metro Police vehicle 500m away from a traffic clogged intersection where the traffic lights are not working (instead of directing traffic) than actually getting out there and clamping down on drivers and vehicles that should not be on the road, and when they do get out there it's because the traffic trolls have run out of pocket money and they need to solicit more bribe money.

Drivers that fail to use the vehicle's indicators have no manners as it is a common courtesy to let fellow drivers known that you intend to change lanes or turn, apart from any and all legal requirements that were thrown out the window years ago when the very first bribe was paid in exchange for a drivers licence.

Then there are people who use their indicators but they do not check if the way is clear to change lanes or turn, they just slap on that indicator and expect other vehicles in the way to dematerialise.

7.50am, St James Street near Wilton Avenue, Bryanston.

Idiot taxi driver with a full load overtakes at least 20 cars on the oncoming lane. This is a tiny suburban road with no servitude and no space on either side. Thus forces a car who was coming up to hit the brakes hard to prevent a serious accident.

What I don't get is why the passengers allow this behavior? How can hundreds of thousands of taxi users be scared of these thugs? Please can someone explain to me why do they put up with it?

What is it with people taking the 14ave offramp (N1 North) there are 2 lanes the left is to turn left and the right lane allows you to turn left and right.
So if in the left lane you supposed to end up either in the left lane or middle and from the right you supposed to go in the right
People turning from the left lane dont check and go into the right lane and get upset when the guy already in the right lane Hoots at them for nearly driving into them.

If you get on to William Nicol (R511?) from the N14 side and drive back up to Fourways you will see a lot of taxis going on the wrong side and cutting in and out all over the place. Mostly due to all the road works there. Very frustrating but it got me thinking because I see this get to the extreme quite often...

These guys obviously drive back and forth all day long, mostly in shocking traffic, and they are incentivized to make as many trips as possible. Sticking to traffic rules will assumedly lose each of them an additional 2-4 trips daily so they do this to make more money, obviously.

The problem then is the system, because a formalized first world public transport system would most likely involve designated/demarcated interval stops. Thus not having any incentive for the drivers to speed up and do stupid things to make more money. You would simply optimize the system to have the least amount of infrastructure for the most effective income, possibly further subsidized by government. Each driver then is merely paid a wage.

So perhaps it is unwise to blame the taxi driver but instead blame the stupid taxi associations and of course the inept government. Sure the taxi driver is not a victim or purely innocent in all of this and a more civilized approach is necessary, but I think a root cause analysis goes a bit deeper than that.

Just a thought though :) could be wrong.

Its worse than that, if they dont make enough money in that day, they dont get paid at all.

They have a quota system - its something like the taxi boss will take the first X thousand Rand, everything after that is for the driver. So, they could do 4 trips in one day and have made a loss. They should introduce laws that guarantee taxi drivers are paid per trip - but then the taxi bosses would riot and kill people! Or maybe the taxi bosses just have the right friends.

If that's true it is just depressing :( Looks to me like we need a dictator with an army to solve that problem lol

It is that system that makes them drive like maniacs until they have made their quota.

I have it on very good authority from an ex driver, that after that, they skim whatever they can from the remaining trips.

Bottom line, is that the driver is not actualy the innocent party here, as he and his boss are both at loggerheads to get as much out of the day as is possible.

Taxis will continue to kill and be killed on our roads, as it is highly unlikely that anyone in authority is going to do anything positive in this regard.
