I went to The side walk cafe in vredehoek last night, this was my experience:

We started our monday evening hungry. The first choice was closed, and The sidewalk was our next option. Having never been there, I was very tempted to test it out. I have only heard good things, so surely this would be like every other time I first go to a restaurant: Start off with high hopes, and pray they don't get shattered.

Well it started off with prompt service, the waiter seemed very eager to help out. By mid evening, it seemed his energy had subsided, and speaking to his co-workers seemed more entertaining than serving his customers.

The food options had a wide variety, but nothing specifically catching my eye, I opted for the chicken curry. It came out as a watery, slightly salted soup with chunks of rubbery chicken swimming amongst equally watery vegetables.

My sister in law ordered a vegetarian pasta, that seemed to exhibit all the hallmarks of microwaved food, although we were assured otherwise. Bland, and undercooked. Tough, rubber, tires, those are the words I would use to describe it.

The head manageress was kind enough to replace all the offending meals, and not even charge us with their replacements. Unfortunately, they did little more than fill us up and giving us the confidence to just ask for the bill and leave.

All in all it would be wrong of me to recommend this restaurant to anyone I could call a friend. Perhaps it was the wrong day of the week to go.

Please share all your dismal experiences so the rest of us don't have to :D

After continually cold food at ocean basket, I discovered that if you ask for your food "extra hot", they put the entire pan in the oven for a minute or two after plating it. Pan and food now stay hot for a lot longer.

^Good Tip^

Rinse wash and repeat DO NOT GO OUT FOR DINNER ON MONDAYS at anything other than a fast food joint.
Chef and crew are weary from weekend service. Old produce needs to be plated "specials" or binned if unsold
the fresh stuff doesn't arrive til mid week
Just Don't do it.

Went to islander pub and grill on Sunday night. Watery mushroom sauce. Piece of plastic in the crumbed mushrooms and slap chips that were hard and horrible. How can you not even make decent chips?

Will not be back. Pathetic really.

If you are in Joburg, you can write your reviews (good or bad) on a site called zomato.com - they have an app as well. Its cool because they have menus, maps and reviews for each restaurant. So you can decide if its worth it before you venture out. Also lets you see places you might not have known about.

Is the purpose of this thread to:

1: Write bad restaurant reviews

or

2: Write reviews of bad restaurants

John Dory's at Montecasino. My friend and I went there for lunch and although e service was OK the food was just bland.

Like that.

So it's reviews of bad restaurants. Can someone change the title?

Simply Asia in Paarl...Man...

I ordered Chicken curry. Everything was raw. Have you ever had raw onion? and slightly raw rice?
I also ordered milkshake, they only had 1 flavour...Vanilla...It tasted like 70% water and 30% milk with froth...

Never Ever Again.

Well they should change it to "Restaurants of the World" because sooner or later every restaurant will slip up.

Or, how about 3: Dont ask stupid questions :p

The purpose of this thread, and indeed all reviews, is to warn people about a bad restaurant before they spend their hard earned cash there. But bad reviews are usually funnier than good reviews, so hence I made this thread focusing on the negative :) Hope that clears the air.

Thanks for this heads up. Simply Asia is usually ok - good to know to avoid that one.

Surprised. Simply Asia is normally good. Their service is not the greatest but the food is normally tasty...

Went to Luigis Boskruin last night for my birthday and was dissapointed. Ordered the lasagne and it was extremely bland and oily. It tasted like they had browned the mince and then thrown it right into the mix without any added flavour. I could not taste any tomoto or even italian herbs in the lasagne. The white sauce and pasta where so bland that all you tasted was the very plain mince. Had to drown it in parmasan to even make it edible and the whole lasagne was swimming in a thick layer of oil which was unpleasant.

Also there was absolutely no kiddies options available, especially in the drinks department. I guess they are aiming at older audiences but we really felt the restaurant was not friendly to young children and overall where very dissapointed in the quality. The pizza we ordered for the kids had a base so thin that the pieces where falling appart but at least it tasted OK. Will not be returning. I guess this is why its not a good idea to try something new on your birthday. Our favourite pizza place closed down in the last month (Pizza Mondo) so we are hunting for a new Italian place now.

Disappointing cause they used to be really good when I lived around the corner. You can try Angelo's in Randpark Ridge for a decent Italian restaurant.
