Looking at buying a bakkie budget R250K

Top 3 that keeps popping up is:

GWM steed 5 2.2 WGT
GWM Steed 5 2.0 VGT
GWM Steed 5 2.0 MPI
[Why is there so many different models WGT, VGT, MPI]

Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi

Mahindra S4 - S6

Any suggestions? What to look out for.

Don't really like the look of Mahindra and not sure of the reliability of GWM & Ford.

Don't do Ford or Toyota

Anything else will most probably remain yours for longer

Heard lots of good things about Mahindra
Consider Isuzu and Mitsubishi

Get an Isuzu.

Planning to keep it till it's scrap, or sell it again one day?

If selling again, Toyota all the way. You'll end up actually driving it for free for 5 years and get all your money back when you sell it.

Otherwise, Nissan NP300 or NP200 are great value 2nd hand.

Single Cab, only to drive to work and back roughly 40km - 50km per day. Also to help everybody move stuff over weekends.
FTFY

The Toyota and NP200 will be stolen long before you can sell them again.

Problem is the NP200 & NP300 had been discontinued. Sooner or later you won't find parts for it.

As always age and kms count first. Next is running costs, and repairs. And I had the same situation and need as you. I got a decent Mahindra, low age, low kms. I paid a lot less (R100k) than I would have for a similar Ford/Toyota/Isuzu/etc. Initial repairs, tires and services were on par with everything else. It does what it needs to do, and it has not given me any major issues.

My friends don't laugh at me about it, but my ex-wife did sleep with the neighbour, but it is not related to the bakkie purchase.

I would have said Navara for the comfort and because their bakkies came standard with a good safety spec, but they never came in single Cab. Your budge will barely make it on the new one and I don't like the barebone spec.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the GWM, and you can get a newer one for the money. But if the Chinese fear gets too much, Isuzu and the Triton can work, there is also the Fiat that's a Triton which would be slightly cheaper.

That's never been a problem, you can still get parts for plenty of discontinued cars, although I wouldn't buy either,.

Sorry gonna call nonsense on this. There will be no parts issues for many many years to come.

Heck there is still a healthy amount of parts for the Opel & Chevy Utility & those naaiers (Chevy) pulled out 7 years ago.

It’s simple: if vehicles shift volume there will be a healthy amount of parts for a hella long time.

Nope, friend had to get rid of his opel corsa bakkie becuase there was no more spares to fix it. Finally got some second hand part at the scrapyard and sold it like is.

So my guess is probably 5 years and you might start having problems with parts. Because there is so many of them on the road they going to be going through the stockpile of spare parts quickly.

From what I can see that's my only option here GWM or Mahindra. I can get demo's for R280000 - R310000.

Starting to think of just to get a Suzuki Baleno GL Auto and call it a day.

@FiestaST

You still enjoying your ride. no major issues or anything?

Buying old used cars, has me stressed thinking what might go wrong or is it a lemon.

What else would you recommend and how would you know if it has been in a accident?
