Bakkie

For your budget I'd suggest also seeing if you can find a single cab Amarok.. It won't be the newest but they are pretty bullet proof for the 2l turbo diesel.

@FiestaST

You still enjoying your ride. no major issues or anything?

Buying old used cars, has me stressed thinking what might go wrong or is it a lemon.

What else would you recommend and how would you know if it has been in an accident?
It’s been a touch under a month now & so far so good. Super frugal on fuel, seats are amazingly comfy, clutch is super light, it rides properly well. I would like some more power NGL but that’s minor.

If you buying a car that is fundamentally solid (I did my research with the Gen 8 Civic plus my aunt had one from new for many years) you greatly lessen your chance of a lemon.

I was looking for a “banger” with reliability from get go so that excluded the Germans as well as anything with a turbo. 2 Other options I was seriously considering was a Mazda 3, the 2L or 2.3L or a Lexus IS. The Honda showed up & ticked pretty much all my boxes.

WRT accident the easiest answer is take a trusted mechanic with, check the body panels, check the service history, do a TD & notice how it drives & lastly be realistic ie. If you’re looking at 10-15 yr old car it will obviously not be perfect so apply a level of context & relatively. My humble 2c of course.

If it’s a high value car then request an independent inspection.

Looking at buying a bakkie budget R250K

Top 3 that keeps popping up is:

GWM steed 5 2.2 WGT
GWM Steed 5 2.0 VGT
GWM Steed 5 2.0 MPI
[Why is there so many different models WGT, VGT, MPI]

Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi

Mahindra S4 - S6

Any suggestions? What to look out for.

Don't really like the look of Mahindra and not sure of the reliability of GWM & Ford.
You didn’t say where are you based? This does matter as well to an extent.

This is pretty good advice, they’re solid & higher miles/kilos ones should not be a walk-away sign. Obviously apply DD & do checks.
In the amarok it's going to largely about what it was used for and what the mileage is...

I bought my 2013 double cab for a little over the budget and it had 200k on the clock, and the only work I've had to do steering related and water pump, both expected with the mileage.

I don't know if I will be brave enough to buy a bakkie with already 200k on the clocks. I dont have a mechanic that can go check if something is funny with the bakkie.

JHB.

You mentioned Mazda. Another I was looking at was the Mazda 2 dynamic?
JHB so you’re sorted with options.

I love the Mazda 2 (both gens), they’re not a bakkie though lol.

If you doing a Mazda 2 then go mid level or above, don’t do base. The fact the current Gen has been on the market for so long it means you can get a neat 17/18/19 for good bucks & it’s incredibly similar to the ‘24.

See if you can find a mate with an obd scanner, at least you can see if there are any major faults reported by the vehicle.

That advice applies to whatever you look at.

What can I say you made me think twice about a bakkie... Checking Autotrafer came across this looks amazing and reviews are good.

Anything I should look out for?

Whats the purpose of beautiful workhorse? Out of that lot, I would take the Mahindra.

Wanted a bakkie becuase of SA roads are crap. But most reviews say bakkies actually dont handle bumps too well. [Bumpy ride]

Not actually going to be using it as a workhorse, work and back. Many potholes and roads are terrible in general.

Astina = top dog spec so you get kit like the sunroof, Bose sound, climate control, electric seats etc. Proper full house vibes, the mileage is on the higher side (by CT standards at least). I’m fairly sure that boot lid spoiler is not stock, looks kinda naff imo.

Other than based on the ad it looks rather straight, it’s a lot of car for the bucks. Take someone with who has a OBD scanner & give it a gander?

So not too good to be true? Let me see if I can find a mechanic that willing to check it out for me.

Some are over 200K on the clock for R200K...

It’s reasonable for what it is, not absurd on either level.

This 2018 Individual from ‘18 has a schit ton more miles & it’s a hatch (that’s a preference thing), if your budget extends to 50k more I would not even consider this ‘18 Individual it would be that Astina & obviously do your DD.

Bakkies do have a hard suspension, but handle the bumps better with a load. Reviewers seldom look at that.
