I have to fly to Singapore in December and thought I'd explore a bit of SE Asia while I'm there. Since I'll only have about 2 weeks, I'm juggling between Bali and Thailand (rather than try to squeeze in both) - any recommendations of which would be best? I'm looking for

a) R'nR - think quiet beaches, too much food, yoga spots
b) affordability - no specific budget in mind but I detest tourist hot spots and want to make the most of my money in the more exclusive/secluded spots
c) ideally I'd like to avoid other tourists while I'm there. Avoiding people in general would be the best, but then who'd bring me my fruity cocktail or cook my prawn curries?:D

Never been to Bali, but if you're looking for secluded, quiet spots, Thailand is definitely not your thing.

Not really. There are plenty of quiet and secluded spots - just avoid the major tourist hubs like Phuket and Phi Phi....

Go further down south and there are plenty of nice quiet islands to go to...

Thailand is your best bet, just go to one of the more quiet locations as suggested already. Bali is very small in comparison and finding any quiet locations is going to be pretty damn hard.

There was an island on the east coast of thailand that I was looking into for my honeymoon a while ago Ko Samui, we just ended up opting for a busier honeymoon instead so went to Phuket. But look around and find your own location, there are plenty I hear.

Hi Mooks, since you've still got a few months to decide you could also consider looking at some lovely spots in Malaysia. My wife and I spent a few nights in Penang two years ago and would go back there at the drop of a hat. Plenty to see and do, people very friendly and food to die for. Definitely quieter than almost every spot on Thailand. Also very easy to get to from Singapore.

Thanks Malkie, will definitely look into it. Do you know if its markedly more expensive than the likes of Thailand/Bali?

As I said we were in Penang 2 years ago so exchange rates might have changed things now. However at that time we found prices in Thailand much the same as in Penang. I guess most of Malaysia would be similar but Singapore is of course very much more expensive.
