Ballon d'or Winner

I think at the end of the day, the person who scores continously and provides enough impact on the game over a period of time will win the Ballon D'or. NO doubt Xavi is a great player, but like most people are saying he doesn't score as much. To be honest I don't watch alot of Barca games, but from what I've it's Messi providing the through balls and runs of the ball to score the goals. Look I might be wrong, but like I said this is what I see.

End of the day what this comes down to is: Is player who controls the game better than a player who creates the chances and scores the game.

Do you think Ronaldo would be so well known, if he didn't score so many goals ?

Maybe, remember a guy called Beckenbauer

Yes! This is what I'm talking about. Yes Xavi controls the game but that doesn't win the game, trickery and goals do and thats what Messi has.

No, the space Xavi opens up wins the game because Messi can take advantage of it. When Messi is closed down, Messi doesn't do ****. However, Xavi's control of the game cans till win it for Barca/Spain.

I got few comments.
1) They showed all the previous ballon d'or winners and I did not see Diego Maradona as a winner, most of our generation rate him as the worlds best ever.
2) First few replies on this thread said Sneijder, why ? He won the champs league with his league team putting awesome performances as a Real Madrid reject, and after that he gets his country to the World cup final, awesome again. Does he deserve it ? I think so but then you look at what Messi did in the last game and you think, does this guy also deserve it ?
3. In 2006, Italy got through the group stages by robbing Australia with a dive for a penalty and with luck (like Zidane incident), they won the World Cup. In that same season, the Awesome Thierry Henry (yes, I'm a gooner) got Arsenal to the champs league final and they lost partly cos Lehman was stupid and got sent off very early on. Can you guys remember Henry's league form ? and he also got to the World cup final but the bloody Italian won the ballon d'or in that year. Injustice ? Definitley.

We can all have our favourites like Maradona and Zidane and Ronaldo when he was playing for PSV and Barca and many others but we can't be judges for other people, only for ourselves.

Being an Arsenal supporter and seeing one match where shorty scored four goals against us, the boys got magic, no doubt. No doubt at all.

Diego never won cos, if I'm not mistaken, during his time only Europeans could win, thats why Pele also never won. Only in '95 did it change to non Europeans too.

I tend to disagree - I think Xavi will be remembered for years to come by true soccer lovers, along with Iniesta as well. There are not many with the talents these 2 have.

The Maradona's and Pele's - it seems you tend to favour strikers and remember strikers quicker than midfielders. Ever heard of Xabi Alonso? lol

Point I'm trying to make - doesn't mean that a player that do not score many goals in his career will not get remembered as one of football's greats after his career has ended or is not influential in the team's success.

I also believe that Xavi has more influence on a game than what Messi does.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching Messi play, the boy is a master at what he does, A Zidane of 2010 somewhat.

I think Barca has the best team in the world at the moment...
Here lies the answer...Barca and Spain are currently the best teams in the world because of the system of play which is very similar. Xavi and Iniesta do not have to adjust when playing for spain (more than half the squad are their team mates).
Messi has to adjust to playing a completely different system when he goes for national duty. It also does not help that Argentina did not have a coach in Maradona. It showed by them qualifying behind the likes of Chile and Paraguay despite having arguably the best attackers in the world. Higuain, Tevez, D Milito, and Messi,

True, which is why I hope the other leagues actually see this. Spanish football is all about doing the basics right and the rest just follows. The vision, skill etc is something that you gradually get better at the more u do it.

Correction Juvetus won Seria A that season with Cannavaro being the Top defender in Italy. Subsequently at the world cup he was the one of the best defender in the tournament

Don't **** with fishy, he knows his ****.

EDIT: Except when it concernes United. then he's as blinkered as the rest of the fanboys. :p

Roy was not a thug. He was a hitman. Know the difference.

Dennis Wise was a hitman. There's a video of him tacklin one of your midfielders hard and just before he gets a card, he pinches said midfielder. The midifielder then goes to knee Wise in the side and gets sent off. Classic. Stealth bru, that's assassin, bugger hitmen :p
