Balotelli has signed for AC

Not sure how you 'beg to differ' with accurate, factual information, and your hypothetical siutation bears no discussion because we are discussing what actually happened, not what could happen. Regarding your comment about Mancunians watching City one week and United the next, that's doubtful. United have pulled in more supporters than City since 1946, so even if some were watching both, far more were watching just United :)

As for your playground argument comment, if you say so. I haven't said anything that would warrant that, but OK.

I had no idea about the attendances and still have unless I look at Wikipedia or something. And attendances are not the point really either. Just that for a period in my life, in my mind, City were a bigger club than Utd. This was highlighted both by their profile at the time which I suppose meant the honours won, the star players, media coverage and matches shown on TV. Albeit highlights on a Saturday night.

The same as Leeds were bigger club at the time than both of them, City were bigger than Utd. And by bigger I mean higher profile and more successful.

That's the way I see it, and your comment of..

And yet through all that they were always bigger than City.

...was not true at the time as I recall it. Sorry, but that's how it is and I'm sure anyone with knowledge and memories of the time might agree with me.

My response was to this statement:

they are a big club with a support in Manchester bigger or equal to Utd.

Riiiiight. The Busby Babes, anyone? And this chap is going to tell us City were bigger or more prestigious than United at one point?

City may have had an edge in United's doldrum years in the 70s, but they have never been the club United have been.

As for support, yes, City does draw a bigger fan base than United does in Manchester itself, but nationwide - excluding foreign fans - only Newcastle United comes close to the support United can muster.

City are, and always will be, the little guy of Manchester, no matter how many superstars they sign and how much money they throw at silverware.

Wonder what Mario's medical will be like. 30min on a treadmill and 24 hours of deep phycological assesment. :p

I never got the fuss about this guy. He scored a few goals, but never lived up to the media hype. He was in the papers more for his off pitch antics than really doing anything of note on the pitch.

His antics make him so likeable :D

He has scored some cracking goals though, he is very talented.

Please tell me how you would know that City have never been the club United have been?

We are talking football here. The game of the working man until recently when money took over and the world got interested. You have no idea of history or culture or tradition outside of a web page, you probably call it soccer ffs.

My argument was that City are not and never have been a small club. If this was a forum in the UK, there would be no argument. Maybe a few Indonesian or Japanese fan boys chipping in, but what the fsck do they know?

Edit: And Busby Babes were the 50s. I think my points might be getting a bit lost here.

There's no way to prove this and it's often thrown about in discussion. I believe it to be true though.

It doesn't matter what you 'believe' or what's 'in your mind'. The numbers speak for themselves.

Take nothing away, he has talent beyond the average joe in the United team, however his wasting that talent by being a @#%^head. If he puts his head down he'd surpass top world class strikers...

What numbers would those be? I'm not sure how you would know if there has never been a poll.

The attendance numbers, for one. Since 1946.

Or is it your contention that there's masses more City fans in Manchester, but they don't seem to make it out to the game?

For further proof, check out the geotagged tweet mapping here.

No, just that City are not a 'very small club'. That's all.

Nice map by the way. Very interesting.

Sad to see Balotelli go. but it is a good thing for the team. Next will be the coach.

My mentioning of the Busby Babes was to point out that Fergie's era is not the only time in United's history where they have been a widely lauded football - see, I use football, I only use soccer when talking to my American friends. Assumptions. . . - club.

I know for a fact that City is the "bigger" club in Manchester and always has been (I spent a frew months there, so I am aware), but it cannot hope to compete with the global or national appeal of United. As I conceded, for a moment in the late 60s and 70s it was at worst United's equal and at best its superior, but a gradual decline ensued into the 80s culminating in their collapse into the depths of the Football League by 1998, making them largely irrelevant for close on 3 decades until the big money rolled in.

Thank you. I'm not saying that United aren't huge, they are and always have been. Even before their astronomical status of the modern era.

Similarly, City are not and never have been a 'very small club'. At times they have eclipsed United and they are a well supported club, especially in Manchester (and even looking at the Tweeter map, across the UK).

That's all I'm trying to say and you've backed it up. So cheers and sorry if I got a bit pee-ed off in the process :)

I understand where the irritation comes in when new generation fans judge size on a freshly packed trophy cabinet. I saw it with a Newcastle fan while I was over there. He got upset - actually angered - when one of our SA friends said Newcastle is a "small" club because they haven't won anything in ages. Telling a Toon, Everton, Villa and even Leeds fan that their club is Mickey Mouse will be taking your life into your own hands.
