Hi All

Got a 3GB package with Afrihost, last night connected to download a 14mb file on a torrent site didn't stay to long on the net(allowed some downloads for others very small amount of data uploaded) checked my bandwidth afterwards and what a shock! All in all 96MB used......Afrihost blame it on my router, windows update but I don't believe that because I update my Windows ect manually except my anti virus.
Any ideas to prevent such loss in future?
I'm new to ADSL and Router modems.

Thanks in advance.

Remove your account details from the modem/router and create a dial-up and change the password.

Do you have a wireless modem/router?

You're lucky actually :) over 2 days Ive lost 5gb of data even when my modem is off, just keeps ticking over and over and over no matter what I do. And no complaining doesn't help, they won't even let you change your own password to what you want it to be!

Something isn't quite right for me either. I was on a 3 gig package with my previous provider (who also went through IS) and usually in a month I'd use 5 gigs max.

I moved over to Afrihost and suddenly I used 9.5 gigs last month and am already on 2 gigs this month.

Is there any other software that monitors bandwidth sent and received on a pc?

It's pointless taking it up with Afrihost if you can't really justify anything because we just don't have access to info. My previous provider provided me with sign in times, contact points, and additional info which we don't get with Afrihost.

I once picked up going through their logs that there were times when they'd duplicate certain sessions. I am concerned that this might be the happening with Afrihost, but we don't get to see the logs.

Thanks all, well it would seem that all of you experience the same problem. Agree log stats no good.
Will download SASA Adsl program and give it a try.

Nice little proggie. Enables you to keep tabs on your account.

Thanks for the link.. it's not loading though. Will try again tomorrow. I do want to get to the bottom of this problem.

I hate being cynical, but I get a sick feeling that I'm actually only getting half a gig for every so called gig ... which means I save nothing in the end.

I think I might run a trial with my old host and see what happens. Thing is, one still never has the proof to take it further anyhow.

I ran some monitoring and found my account stats to be pretty spot on with afrihost.

There was some mess up with the graph and bandwidth sessions being duplicated on the graph. I think this was when they turned off 24 hour resets, it messed up the graph, but the main stats on my account was still fine and well under what the graph read.

The testing was done a month or so ago.

Well it happened again! Downloaded a small 4mb pdf file, just surfing the net afterwards and believe me almost 129mb used! 51mb uploaded?? To where??
I need serious assistance to stop this trend.
Here is my log from SASA ADSL monitor:

The best option would be to enable SNMP on your router (if it supports it) and then use an application like PRTG traffic grapher to monitor the actual traffic passing through the router's WAN/PPPoE connection. That amount should correlate with Afrihost's amount of cap used.
PRTG Traffic Grapher can also monitor the traffic passing through your own PC with the use of its packet sniffer. It can't show the application/process names that are utilizing the network though. For that reason, I would recommend that you try something like NetLimiter, BitDefender, Comodo Internet Security or ZoneAlarm to keep track of the cap used per application AND making use of their firewalls of course.

Here's an older thread (that I've just updated) where we've mentioned a few bandwidth monitoring tools: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=202445

ISP responsibility

Can you have concurrent connections on your line ????

Ask your ISP to monitor your activity -- phone them with the IP you have when connected and let them monitor it.

Virus / Spyware / Adware -- and worst of all WETWARE

IF people set their router firewalls PROPERLY then perhaps there would NOT be this problem.

Help with cap

Hey Guys!

MY cap is also going, i have no idea where it has gone... i disabled all anti virus and microsoft updates, but the cap doesn't even last for like 10 days... (i only have 1 GB) but still... it's going to fast... i don't download anything at all...

Is it possible for someone to "steal cap"?

Thanks

Thanks for the info!
My Router Firewall settings:

IP/Port Setting
Outgoing Actions: Allow and INCOMING Actions: Deny

MAC Filter both set on Allow (is this correct?)

Thanks Pada for your info as well.

You can also try using the command line program netstat.

open cmd then try 'netstat -b -n'. That might show you what programs is opening a connection.

Assuming it is your pc of course.

Pada...I'm using the Planet ADE-4400A

Stevovo...thanks will give netstat a try.

Thanks Guys!

Ok, I ran netstat and it shows the following: firefox, orbit(my download program), ARES(P2P) and JQS.exe (used by Java(TM) Platform
