Bandwidth Disappearing

I know that I meant the fact that I can prove it was not my PC downloading the stuff.

UPLOAD

Just another interesting way to check the download loss. I have been keeping track of my HDD sizes as I am doing a clean up and on the day the 1 gb when missing none of the drives increased in size so how do you explain that. Definitely no MS updates or the likes???

Upload also counts towards CAP depletion. -- which will NOT show on YOUR HDD

A dumb question but how does one do this (the bold part)?
You have to put your router in bridge mode, and then you can create a new PPPoE connection on your PC to dial the account.
A simple google search would show you how to create a PPPoE connection in Windows.
Usually the routers would have some kind of wizard to easily setup the router in bridge mode.

And the saga continues. Swopped over to my webafrica account for a day or so and usage was very low less than 300mb. I then needed to download a few files totalling 700mb and away we go with the figures reading a usage of +900mb. How is this possible?

I somehow managed to use my afrihost account up to 4 gb's today. This could have been an oversight by not swapping to the uncapped service on my part, so I topped up with a 1 gb package a few minutes ago

Since then, it's used 50mb of bandwidth, without me even logging on to it.

Methinks Afrihost has a bug somewhere.

It tells me that my account used 4 GB's today, I haven't used it since yesterday.

Will query this with them tomorrow during office hours

another oneway conversation where we get told cannot possibly be!

Well, the one way of checking for fraud/stolen bandwidth, would be to simply disconnect your ADSL router completely and then to check the account balance/status using another Internet connection, like 3G/HSDPA.
This should be your first step if you don't have much technical experience with viruses, spyware and network monitoring...

Well here's a weird one. I had about 800mb in my account this morning. By my estimates, I used about 200mb. Then late this pm, I decide to check out a free usenet server and a newsreader. I request the newslist and the subject headers of one or two groups. Bang, 600mb is gone out of my account. There is no way I downloaded any of it from Telkom. The only way its gone, is because the server is proactively planning for the eventuallity I might download the entire Usenet with binaries and alles. So they take me out just in case. Either that, or somebody doesn't like Usenet fullstop. BTW, why isn't Telkom providing free USENET? Also, why no gopher server for basic services like Project Gutenburg?

telkom/saix does provide news servers: news.saix.net set 2 connections :D

Do you think we will ever get an answer?

WHAT exactly do you want ?????????

People have mentioned a number of things to try / test

Have you tried them ALL ????

It is a bit like Skydiving -- YOU have to be responsible for your OWN parachute.

During an active session note YOUR IP address
then phone your ISP give them this info plus your Telephone number and ask them to check what is going on
and
monitor your account.

Get personal firewall software ( FREE )

Get usage monitoring software ( FREE )

READ these forums to find out where you get this stuff ( and how to use it )

I don't think that it's just coincidence the same thing happening to all the guys here. It's not the first time someone has moaned about the same thing. I do think it's a coincidence all my bandwidth stopped disappearing after giving them so much grief

Well I sat for 3 days constantly emailing them, moaning, sending angry mail. Demanded data logs. They sent logs of each hour of each day showing the usage but doesn't help recovering what's lost as the chances of you proving you didn't use the bandwidth unless it's from another line.

I guess they want Afrihost to fix their systems. If one user reports missing bandwidth then one assumes that the user is a noob and gives them the speech you just gave about firewalls etc.

There is a similar thread over here:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=200383

Skimming over this thread and the other, here is a quick list of people reporting cap inconsistencies, all with Afrihost: (I didn't even bother to check the main Afrihost thread.)
  1. Fransman
  2. robdutchmonkey
  3. Chelle
  4. kaisterkai
  5. pietb
  6. klasvaakie
  7. bullzeye.za
  8. afrodeity
  9. Niccia
  10. Syndyre
  11. adamr
  12. lotus123
  13. HummerCellc

I'm not clued up on Afrihost systems and maybe all of the above are mistaken and the Afrihost system is perfect. Thats quite possible, but at some point it becomes statistically improbable.

HHhmmm Advertising and Marketing budget  :D

Still -- Logs DON'T lie

There are mechanisms for helping yourself.
