What I want to know is... will IVY/Telkom/Gvt then be inclined to up the rental for that last mile so Telkom can be fed it's bottle.

Prices cant go down that dramatically, it would hurt the Voice industry too badly. Believe me chaps, it wont happen.

Didn't the people from the newspapers report that we will have free/cheap electricity by 2000?
These type of articles are written with a alot of E-magination, forgetting that the reality is corporations with no responsabilities towards public interest are making the decisions. It's not like the struggle for equality, that was easy. Its harder to get private corporations to become 'competative'

this article is written once a week just with slightl changes.
The general idea is that any large ISP will be able to buy bw at much cheaper rates than currently. So, if IS for example changes their accounts from R299 for 5GB to R299 for 20GB, then everyone else must follow suit.
The minumum price of broadband will stay roughly the same. A DSL connection will not go below +- R150 a month, but the GBs will gradually become dirt cheap. A 4 Meg DSL will still cost around R450 a month, but will become high/un-capped.
There are fixed input costs to any broadband connection. I would say around 30% of the cost is in actual national/international bw. The rest is hardware, support and maintenance. So SEACOM will be reducing that 30% cost by 50 times, not the full 100% price of broadband.

DSL users wont really notice it that much as we still sadled with basically a R200 odd charge before any BW is added on. So my R300 bill might come down to R220 or so which is great but not that great.
They need to get someone to provide DSL other than telkom so that they can get rid of that stupid a** line rental carp.

yea, i think the price will come down............ It will take so long to become cheap, by the time it does, there will be something better out there that will cost an arm and a leg that will be a must have just like the internet is now!
