Bandwidth Theft - Expert Information needed

Over the weekend I had over 8gigs of International bandwidth stolen. Now i'm really confused and need some expert info.

The strange thing about all of this is that the bandwidth was stolen from an ISP account that i manually dial into and not the ISP account that i have set on my router.

I also called the ISP to find out if anyone was dialing from another line and they said nobody was according to their systems.

What baffles me is that even if someone penetrated my wifi security how would they be able to use bandwidth from an account that needs to be dialed into?
 
Ask for specific logs from the ISP.
You want to know specific times the account was connected with and if possible , what phone number it originated from.

If they can only give you the times , you can at least see if you were at home at the time.
 
You sure you didn't leave any torrents or something on?
Unless they some how managed to gain access into your LAN itself and gain access to some NB stuff but then
again i could be completely wrong
 
Perhaps one of your cronies wrote down that info when at your place ?? By any chance do you have that info written down on the wall or saved on your PC ??

I know there are tools to display the *asterisks* of password fields on a given PC.....

Ask the ISP for a list to be mailed of connection details....
 
If this is a dialup account, I can't see how someone can download 8Gb in a weekend.

The ISP should also be able to give you logs for the account indicating when there was logged into the account as well as the line port no that actually logged into the account.
 
ISP will have port number connected from. Get that & see if there is anything besides yours. If not then the data did come from your PC.

With some ISPs you can get that info off the bandwidth couter page. e.g. Webafrica. I think axxess to but not sure.
 
You can also lock your accounts to your line port at Web Africa to prevent this happening again - DSL secure. Other ISP's should offer the same service.
 
I'm sure that was what was meant too. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to recover that bandwidth, however you should set up Port Locking and change your password. Call your ISP to have it done, or you may even be able to activate it on your control panel.
 
8 GB on a dial-up? in a weekend? Wow, I was lucky if I ever got 1MB out of it in a year. xD
 
Well I was in a similar situation a couple months back where I thought that someone was stealing our BW but I could never quite put my finger on it. Eventually I got fed up and installed netlimiter and avast on all our machines at home and what I found was that the machine my parents use had some sort of virus on it which was essentially sending out spam email 24/7. I estimated that this virus had probably sent out 20GB worth of spam over the course of several months. The reason it was so hard to detect was that a)the machine connected via pppoe so the virus couldn't always send and b)what it was sending was small enough that it didn't seem to have a major impact on net performance but obviously it built up to several GBs over the course of a month.

However 8GBs in a single weekend does seem a bit excessive for a virus but you never know. I would suggest you check it out just to make sure.

PPPoE Dialup? Normal ADSL connection?

There is no dialling involved with ADSL and your router also connects to your ISP via PPPoE, so not sure what a "normal adsl connection" is suppose to be.

Do you know the difference between 'bridging' and 'routing' modes on your router? The one lets you configure the ISP details into the router (always connected). The other one lets you make a dial up connection on your PC (not always connected, only when you DIAL UP), capish?
 
Don't some routers keep a log of the IPs accessing the router and for which protocols. I think that netgears do this at least. But maybe its not a log of your internal network but the outward one… dunno really xD

Someone might have ''sniffed'' out your Wi-Fi network.
 
Agree with the above... Enable dslsecure or the like, and limit it to your own line.
Then install NetWorx monitor.

You can measure speeds, run diagnostics, and record daily, hourly, weekly trends on your usage with that. (just disable local LAN traffic).
