Telkom is my ISP & bandwith usage takes place when I am not using my PC. Last night I noted (Telkom track tool) my combined usage of 49.45mb just before I disconnect the cable. I re-connected this morning & the combined usage has increased to 181.66mb which means I have used 132.21mb while disconnected. I dont see how this is possible.

I have a Netgear DG632 modem and regularly change the password. Any help or advise will be appreciated, thanks.

Is the session from your IP address? take note of your IP on an evening, before you disconnect or unplug, then check if your same IP is being used. Is so then its Telkom's fault, else someone else is using your details.

You should be thinking about changing all 3 passwords: That which gets you into the modem (192.168.0.1 / admin / password), that which gets you onto your wireless (wep / wpa) and that which logs you onto your account at telkom ([email protected] / abcdefg).

edit: you can change the first two yourself, but you'll have to call telkom to request a password change on your account. Maybe you can do it on their website - I've never tried.

I think your usage only gets measured when your session ends. So if you where online for a long time then plugged out the cable you would not have accounted for that session.

Maybe next time check your usage then disconnect the router and reconnect and check your usage then.

I have had some bandwidth stolen from me and it is usually not in the area of 130mb's a night more like a gig or 2.

bandwidth is measured at the end of the session but to be safe change all passwords and change your router l/p

Checking your stats here is quicker than at the telkom site. It usually updates within 5 mins of a session disconnect. It's also way easier to understand than all those glitzy graphs telkom's titracker uses.

Physically discounnect the phone line from router or switch off your router. I think someone mentioned before that ping and exchange of data beween your router and exchange box will also count against your bandwidth usage.

I don't have any proof of this, but it's from the horse's mouth as the saying goes.

There's someone in this area who has a small internet cafe going in their store and he's friends with someone who works at Telkom, I've overheard him bragging about how he uses the "spare" bandwidth on other people's accounts thanks to his Telkom friend who gives him account information. I know the person I overheard him saying it to and she confirmed that I heard correctly.

Now this is by no means a major city by any stretch of the imagination so this Telkom guy clearly isn't anything high up. So I can't help wondering just how easily they can get access to the account details and do with them as they will. Maybe if your bandwidth is being used faster than you think someone is using your "spare" bandwidth, compliments of Telkom.

Considering how well Telkom treats it's employees I don't think something like this happening is all that surprising and is just another reason to give Telkom as little money as possible.

SkullX, maybe get another account even if it's just a 1Gb (not from Telkom) and use that for a while (removing the Telkom accounts details from your router) and see if the 1GB evaporates like your Telkom account. Then once this 1Gb account is used up go back to your Telkom account and see if it's continued to evaporate while you haven't even been logged into it.
