Pls excuse my ignorance but could someone please tell me if a lot of bandwidth is used for online gaming. My boss is on a witch hunt because our 3 Gb cap has been used up. However, his son does use the office network for downloading torrents and, the latest thing, some online gaming - looks like action games. When accused, he has produced a list showing his torrent downloads and they don't match the days we are investigating - I got a printout from MWeb My Adsl. Apart from the boss, there's only two of us and my conscience is clear - I have my own line at home, the other girl simply doesn't have time either. Any advice would be a great help.

Depends on the game. Something like WoW is minimal compared to torrents.

The son is the usual culprit! Two months ago we used up our cap in one week but for some bizarre reason it carried on and on until he had used up 37 GB! Unfortunately, "Christmas" didn't last into the following month but it doesn't seem to stop him trying and lying! Thanks for the reply.

Good luck. Hope your boss kicks his ass. Easy enough solution, just block the account for anything but browsing and email and you'll see a drastic reduction.
However, if he games an exceptional amount of time he could be eating into a chunk of the bandwidth. Tell your boss to keep an eye on him.
I assume by action you mean a First Person Shooter, If this is the case then he could quite easily be the culprit depending on how much he is playing. Playing continueously for hours on end can easily chew hundreds of megabytes and in fact could easily cream that 3 GB cap in about 10 days just with online gaming.
It really does depend on how much he is playing and what type of online games are being played.
I play Crysis Wars online and that can eat approximately 30-50MB an hour depending on how many people are in the server.

And just adding my 2c then BF2 and COD4/CODWaW, use anywhere from 50 - 90 megs an hour depending on players on the server and how much VOIP you use.

Online gaming can use craploads depending on a few factors:
1. Type of game
a: FPS/fast paced games use alot of bandwidth
b: MMOs like World of Warcraft is relatively easy on bandwidth BUT [see the rest]
2. Updates of game and whether content is downloading "on demand"
-a: Updating WoW can easily be 1gb+ depending on how old your client is..
-b: Games like GuildWars/Second Life downloads complete instances/zones as you enter them the first time....
3. Any other activities you do with online games
-a: Using Ventrillo/Teamspeak to have live chatting is very common in most action based games, this alone is like being on Skype with 10 other people for the duration of the game you're playing...

serious ? nah its kinda right well i dont know all i know is i dont host but its local... Lets see in a few months what modern warfare chows... should be the same
