Banting

"I have been eating lamb chops, biltong with thick fats, full fat yoghurt, avocados etc..."

Thin...but financially ruined. Banting is the most expensive diet on the planet.

No doesn't have to be expensive. Just think of the take aways and money spent on the junk food. I would rather go on banting. By time you got 2 king steer medium meals etc way over R100. You can buy a pack of chicken and veg for under that and make 3 or 4 meals etc

I got down to 5.5% body fat on a banting diet, my mom is now down 6kg in about 3 months. It does not have to be that expensive. Eggs are cheap, veggies are cheap, cheese can be cheap so it's only meat that's expensive, so you just need to shop around for the specials. Food lovers often has chicken at a decent price, their cheese is cheap too, and you can usually get reasonably priced boerewors at places. I sometime make my own biltong with the silverside/topside roasts from PnP. You also don't need to go totally overboard with meat, just keep the carbs down.

Wow. 5.5% BF. Well done. Any pics available at that BF%?

And did you find that you needed to count calories to get down that low.

I'll be happy if I can get down to 10% one day.

No way you going to get to 5.5% BF by diet only. Six pack starts showing at <10%.

5.5%? Geesus... Wow :)

Yes, I kept my calories at bodyweight in pounds x 12 (+-2000 cals). On weekends I would sometimes switch to carbs and keep fat low (never combine fat and carbs!) then I'd eat around 3000 cals. What I love about banting, is I'd feel full on 2000 cals banting, but would be positively starving on 3000 cals of carbs.

I'll see if I can find some pics. I couldn't maintain 5.5% and my SO happy, but consider anything in single digits a good place to be, and fairly easy to maintain.

In terms of gym, I trained pretty much as hard before I started banting as I did after (3-5 times a week), and never did any cardio.

Please tell me how it doesn't have to be expensive? I don't buy junk food to start off with.

Ok I found a picbackinshape.jpg

Dates of the pics I know from left to right:

4) late Jan 2011
5) April 2011

7) current, and feeling like I should cut again, but this is my easy maintenance shape... Excuse the shave job, my wife's idea of a joke :)

Must say I've started eating a veggie banting meal for lunch at work, because that's what's available here, and I've been really surprised by how filling a small portion is. And also how long I stay full for.

I pretty much spend the rest of my day enduring various degrees of hunger, but from about midday to 5pm I'm not hungry at all. It's great, actually.

Great job man.

And thanks for the feedback on calorie tracking.

I tried it for a bit, the GF is heavy into it but I just don't know... Scared I'm going to die of a heart attack :erm:

Evidence shows it will do exactly the opposite and reduce your chances of a heart attack.

banting messes up your taste buds. so even if you get the craving. when you give in it tastes horrible. yay banting.

I find my tastes have shifted so that I like bitter things more than I used to. Mature cheese, for instance, tastes a lot better than it used to. I can now eat plain yogurt whereas it was too boring before. Mango is now as much of a treat for me as chocolate is, and I don't find I have the craving to buy chocolate all that often.

The problem is that if I do something delicious in the house, I'm still unable to resist it. Mango is an example. Another example is homemade ice cream, like the stuff I made last week. Good thing I don't make home made ice cream often, because if I did, I'd be massive. Pretty much made it for a dinner party and then demolished the leftovers. Over a couple of days.
