Howdy

I have been given a barcode scanner to use with a POS. However it has no details on it so I dont know what make or model it is.

If I scan a barcode, it beeps, but doesnt register in the POS (Omni Accounts)

I have a new scanner and it works fine.

Is there a way to reset these things, or should they just work?

While most bar code scanners are already pre-configured to read most if not all bar code formats, some scanners are only configured to read a handful of formats. If this is case, you may need to configure the bar code scanner , but you need the user manual or the leaflet that came with the unit as you need follow the sequence to do that and also reset it back to factory defaults.

The barcode scanner should have a model number on it , normally underneath even if it has no name on it

Test the scanner. Open a simple text editor and then scan a basic barcode. You should get the barcode and then a CRLF (new line)

It's probably set to the wrong interface type (serial/keyboard wedge/USB) for the cable attached. As Esquire said you'll need to know the model before you can change any settings (you have to scan special programming barcodes, they're all different).

Post a picture, maybe someone recognizes it.

Will post pics - It is set up for USB as I scan a code setup for USB scanners and it beeps. Try another interface and nothing happens.

Does it have a ps/2 option? Some older models needs a ps/2 keyboard attached to it via the y cable before it will scan.

Have you tried scanning a few diffrent barcodes?

Some maybe in a format that works,
Otherwise yes, you'll need to program via programming sheets.
