What goes into bringing a Base Station up? I have a Buddy at one of the networks and he reckons the EIA's are a major challenge? Seeing as there is so much pressure on You to get the network up I thought it might be a good idea to understand what goes on in the background.

Thats actually a good question monkeylover!!! And it will give users and idea!
Its depending on which base station you are talking about, could you be specific as to which one?

From my understanding, they first need permission from ICASA, then permission and\or permits from some environmental commission........and I cant remember what else

As well as:
EIA
wayleaves or lease agreement
decent high site
decent atmospheric conditions
AC power (Eskom)
equipment room or container
backhaul link (normally telkom cable)
link equipment
performance monitoring equipment
back up DC power
planners
contractors to do all the work
project managers
capital funding to pay for everything
and, um, sufficient potential customers to warrant the above!!!

New Base Stations

OMW!

& the times for all this stuff just an EIA must take months...& um skip on the "Telkom cable" I'm sure Neotel must use Fibre or some other option like Microwave as backhaul?

They don't have backhaul to ALL their sites.
