Would the AAO netbook suffice just for emaling and web browsing ? . My only concern is the operating system (Linux) which I dont know . I just want to be able to connect to my office pc when I am out of town through Log-Me-In , Would it run Log-Me-In on the Linux system . Please excuse all the questions but I am tecnologically challenged .

I have one.

It's great for email and web browsing. Not sure how log-me-in would run, but should be decent. If you have a spare license, you could always install XP, which would run well if you upgraded the RAM.

I have the Netbook in question and if you don't know Linux, then get a Windows version instead. As much as what I punt Linux I'll be hounest and say that its not suited for everyone.

Log-me-in will only work on Windows or Mac, no LINUX version. Linux can anyway run terminal services but then you need to set up a teminal services server or allow remote desktop viewing to your PC?

So get a Windows version instead.

Would windows XP install on the 8gig HDD ? and would it effect the speed at all ?

Yes it'd install, but wouldn't leave you much space for anything else. You could, of course, expand with a SDHC card though.

The main issue with running Windows would be the RAM, though. 512MB isn't really enough for Windows.

Well Robass, if you're interested ... I will be loading a special on an Asus 701CW tomorrow through to Thursday. If you're happy with a 7" screen, this version comes with Windows, and will be really cheap. PM me if you want more details.

Do you get a remote desktop viewer for Linux based system . All that I will need the netbook for is , email , browsing and some type of remote desktop application . I work/run my business in Pastel and would need to connect to my office pc somehow .

When I get to work ... I'll ask my employee ... he uses Hamachi a lot.

I see incredible corruption still has the AAO A110 (8.9" screen, Intel Atom N270 processor 1.60 GHz, 512MB RAM, 8GB Hard drive, 802.11b/g WLAN, etc) on sale for r1999. It comes with Linux but you should be able to install XP on it with minimal effort. I use remote desktop from mine to control the PC in my office regularly.

I'm sure I recall seeing a linux version of remote desktop that would handle the job.

Loading Ubuntu instead of linpus might also be an idea.

Well i installed windows xp on my sister's 8gb netbook, after some configuring it takes up 6.9gb but OMG windows xp runs like a dog on netbooks.

When i was working on her lappie yesterday i wanted to break the thing, try steer clear of windows xp for netbooks, look at linux i would say.

windows 7 runs like a bomb on my 8gb netbook, far better than xp but then it takes 7.1gb of the 8gb space which is not a problem as i have a 16gb sd card for storage.

For a little bit more cash, you can get a Acer Aspire One A150-Aw Linux Netbook
version: W-W Warranty, Atom 1.6GHz, 1GB, 120GB, 8.9", White from expansys for R2299.

More then enough space to move to XP and the extra ram should help aswell.

Much better idea!

Windows 7 is shocking on a slow netbook, i could not believe how poor it was.

Freezing, slow, normal xp kuk but 100x worse.
Windows 7 is fantastic on my AAO (I've got the HDD one similar to the model mentioned by catweasel).

I have no issues with XP or Windows 7 on my eee 1000H. They running great!

For remote desktop, will VNC suffice? There are a multitude of VNC client/servers, and what's nice is that if you run VNC on your Windows (office) pc, you can still access it remotely from your Linux (netbook) pc.

I would definitely recommend getting Ubuntu onto the 8GB Linpus AAO, mainly because quite a few things in the Acer-modified Linpus are broken. Otherwise, Linpus runs extremely fast.

One nice thing about Windows RDC is it allows you to change the resolution of the remote screen to match the local one rather than just scale it. It also allows for simple printer and hdd sharing.

Sorry i have fixed my typo, it was meant to be windows xp not 7.

Windows 7 runs far smoother on my netbook than xp does on my sisters which is the exact netbook.
