Hey guys

Are there any specific EQ settings I need to adjust? When I listen to metal the drum bass distorts the sub even at the slightest bass adjustment, deafening out the bass, so when a quick double bass comes rolling in, its just one big mesh of bass. I'm looking for that crisp sound! I'm using the Logitech X540 5.1's and my Maximus III Gene onboard sound.

Thanks!! :)

Invest in better speakers. Although the logitech's satelites are decent, the sub is lacking when pushed. The frequency is to low for the sub to master and respond to, thus the "not so awesome bass guitar solo" effect that it's producing at the moment.

You could try dropping the lower freqeuncies in whatever app you are using's equalizer but as A3@MBB mentioned it might be worthwhile investing in better speakers, the alternative is to play the music softer which is never good :D

If your sub is in a corner, remove it from there and if possible, don't have it next to a wall, as this will possibly exaggerate the problem frequencies.

I've tried all the little tweaks I could with the eq, lowering the frequencies creates a sort of dampening effect on the other instruments every time the bass hits, so I think it might be in my best interest just to save up and upgrade! http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-logitech-z-5500-5-1-speaker-set-black-thx-certified-52708.html Think those are worth the bucks? :)

You could try lowering your bass crossover frequency, since the 540's are at 120hz, if you can with your soundcard. You might end up with a small frequency gap between the satelites and the sub, but it could be better than your current problem.

Those will do the job but it would be interesting to compare those to like one of the entry level Sony component systems (in the same price bracket)

Also, and this is just to do with your sound quality in general, don't listen to a stereo sound source in 5.1. Bad idea. The frequencies interfere with one another and it will not sound the way it is meant to.

It all comes down to how much money you spend. You get what you pay for, simple as that.

There is a reason why some 2.1 are R600 and some are R2200. If you need 5.1 then by all means go Z-5500. If you need 2.1 then go Corsair SP-2500.

Or Logitech Z-2300, or Logitech Z-4... :D

was waiting for that... :)

Corsair SP-2500 > Logitech Z-2300

:D

Very possible. On paper, yeah. For about R1,000 extra though.

Still waiting for a comparison between the two, with a decent sound card - minimum Xonar DX.

And I just have this feeling that the Z-2300 sub is better.

Okay I can see where this is going :D

R1,000 extra? Not sure where you are shopping :p R500 more will get you the Corsair SP-2500 's

I've heard the Z-2300 and there is no denying that the sub is a monster. If you looking for earth moving not-as-clear bass then Z-2300's are for you. If you looking for something with a more of a "punch-bass" effect then SP-2500's are for you.

Personal preference really. But having listened to both, I'm quite comfortable in saying that I reckon the R500 is worth the extra quality on the responsiveness of the bass.

I exaggerated on the price. I don't deny that the Corsairs are better. Just not sure if they're worth me upgrading. And not sure if the bass is as good. Personally I find the Z-2300 sub quite accurate. Could be that I am just used to it though.

Tell me, what's the Corsair's sub like with the bass turned right down? Is it almost non-existent? The Z-2300 bass is too much with the bass on lowest.

honestly I dont think its worth upgrading from what you already have. I mean, if you had some 2.1 cheapies then of course... but if you gonna upgrade from there, you might as well go huge... or go home! :D

Ya could be that you used to it, who knows....

I've always found Logitech a bit too "boomy" for me. I was always aware of that factor after I heard a 5.1 set back in the day. Cant remember the model number but I know it had a blue LED control thingy. My brothers set of Altec Lansing 2.1's  Also the reason why I have never upgraded until now. waaaay too boomy, I hate that.

on my unit the volume is obviously separate to the sub volume. volume goes up to about 70% , then moves into the "optimal" level. I would say thats about 70-90%. Then the top 10% is max. I keep the sub level in the optimal section, and i fiddle with the volume as and when I need it. If I turn the bass right down, I can promise you that you will not hear it at all....

basically the same thing as "night mode" cuts off all low freq to the sub... quite handy when playing games late at night.

Im still really getting to know these speakers, but from what I have seen/heard so far Im very happy

edit : just need a soundcard... frontosa no stock though!! :-/

Eish, that single factor might sway me to getting them. :)
