Hi Guys
Just wanted to know whats the best apps or tools to use to get the most out of my battery. my phone went in for repairs as the battery charge by itself and won't last for and hour. got it back, but want to know how to get the most out of it.

1)when should the battery be charged when its low, until it dies, under 10% or more then 20%.
2)what apps can i remove on the gingerbread version 2.3.6vto save battery life.
3) must i root it or put a different rom on thats better for battery usage. is ice cream 4 out yet for the nite.
4how do i root it or update the rom?
5)any other tips will help

thanks

1) We started a discussion on that in the Notes thread, these days its almost advised to charge your battery whenever possible, especially over night. Modern batteries get damaged more by running them down than by charging them extra-regularly.

2) I cannot help much on the GB side of things, had my phone for less than 12 hours before it went to ICS. If I left my phone run without charging I can get about 2 days out of it, rooting will help as you can remove or freeze useless system apps, also you can make use of apps like tasker to manage things like GPS/Wifi/3G based on certain criteria. I have network data disable automatically when I am on Wifi and GPS is only on when using my selected apps. Use wifi whenever possible, wifi uses up to 40% less power than EDGE and 70% less than 3G/HSDPA, which is why my battery lasts so long, I am on wifi 23 hours a day.

3) Suppose I answere that in the last one, as I said already on ICS so I cannot helo much there, but anything you need to know will be on xda, I used this guide for Flashing and rooting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20963730.

4)See above

5) Use wifi, root, go ICS, maybe buy a spare battery and stand-along charger.

Just on a side note perhaps unrelated.

I don't know about the latest Android phones but I have noticed a really utterly stupid retarded thing on both the S1 and S2 both updated to latest standard android software.

The fact that when on WCDMA mode it constantly jumps from 3G to H+ and back again despite reception. On observation on around 2 S1 models and 2 S2 models this seems to drain battery like no ones business. Average to lower tech savvy phone users obviously won't pick this up or are just too lazy to monitor it.

On WCDMA when I use the *#301279# menu and change the revision to 3G only or HSDPA only the battery lasts way longer despite the fact it is still on "3G" which is probably all too quickly blamed in this case. But granted of course if I just leave the phone on GSM mode with Edge or GPRS it then lasts way longer even.

If the above can be verified I imagine this could also still be happening on later devices, these silly things tend to be overlooked :)

The reason it jumps from 3g to H+ is coz H+ is super power hungry compared to standard 3G. So this is a much needed step. Though whenever your device needs access to the internet, it will switch to H+, thats for syncing, emails, the whole lot of background tasks, etc.
In the end this itself uses a lot of battery just for the switching to-and-from all the time.

UMTS (normal 3G) - up to +-400kbps
HSDPA - up to +-7mbps
HSUPA - up to +- 21mbps (H+) (A LOT OF POWER)

Now ask yourself this, Do you really need speeds >7mbps? or rather can your network provide you with >7mbps bandwidth?
If the answer is no to either one, then I recommend using HSDPA only, it saves a lot of battery and is quite snappier that H+ for browsing. Now you might say but H+ is faster, well yes it is for continuous transfers. But when you browse, it jumps between 3G and H+, that jump normally takes a second or two to happen. In the end you loose more battery and you wait longer. Not what I'd call ideal.

On my S2 I use HSDPA and its just fine for anything really, streaming is good, youtube is fine and app installs take a few seconds longer, but who cares for 2-4 seconds?

Note: there is quite a HUGE difference in UPLOAD speeds from HSDPA to HSUPA.
I get like 50KBps upload with HSDPA and 300KBps upload with HSUPA.

I force mine to 2G. More than enough for maps, whatsapp, email, etc... saves a lot of battery.
If I want to download something I wait until on WiFi which is almost always.

How do you force 3G to edge?

keep in mind 2G is very very very slow redering it practically unusable (for me in cape town), except for chating and notifications, but any kind of browsing/Facebooking/streaming is just to painfully slow to bear.
Thats why I recommend HSDPA or normal 3G instead. Its good on the battery.

Only if you still on Gingerbread, with ICS you have the option of installing Onavo Extend which compresses dataserver side before sending it down to the handset, the data you pull down is essentially 80% smaller greatly increasing the effective speed of EDGE, I have not used 3G or HSDPA in months.

Onavo compresses everything from app usage, browser usage and even market downloads, only thing it does not touch is streaming data like youtube or shoutcast and its automatically disabled when on wifi.

Agreed.
I am a power user and have no issues with edge. If I want to download something on mobile I switch to 3G but this is very rare.
Plus - you score the extra battery life.

we just need a toggle for this? :( I have a toggle, but it simply opens up the settings where I need to choose between "GSM only" or "GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)"

the only crap thing is that if you need to pop onto google or fb or something then you dog slow... now you need to go change it to the other setting.

pity there isnt a way to force it to use HSDPA and ignore HSUPA

I imagine that would be better for the battery life overall

Dude... If you got a SGS2, SGS1, Note, etc..
Dial this from the stock dialer: *#301279#
set HSDPA only
done

so much for HSUPA being so much faster than HSDPA

one gives me +- 230kbps and the other gives me 350kbps
